ALLENDALE, Mich.- Both the A Singles and A Doubles draws featured a Greyhound versus Greyhound championship Monday, as the UIndy Women's Tennis team closed out a dominant tournament at the 2018 ITA Midwest Regional.
SINGLES
In the A singles draw, top-seeded
Hanna Volikova successfully defended her 2016 and 2017 singles titles, going 6-0 through the event, taking two-set victories in all six of her victories. Â Volikova, who has finished runner-up in the singles draw at the ITA Oracle Cup each of the last two seasons, never allowed an opponent to win more than four games in a set, taking the final over her freshman teammate
Nikol Alexeeva 6-2, 6-1.Â
Volikova opened the singles portion of the event with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Walsh's Beidacki in her first match Saturday. She followed with a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of Grand Valley's Christman in the round of 32, and opened her Sunday with a 6-1, 1-0 ret., win over MT's Johnson to head to the quarterfinals of the draw. Volikova retired bracket 5-seed, Wayne State's Kuznetsova 6-0, 6-0 to make the semifinal, where she defeated Grand Valley's Griva, the 9-seed in the draw, 6-4, 6-4 to move to the final and overtake Alexeeva.
The UIndy rookie took runner up in the bracket from an unseeded position, knocking off the #16, #2 and #13 seeds en route to her showdown with Volikova. Alexeeva won her first match with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Southern Indiana's Thompson, and followed with a hard-fought 5-7, 7-5, 10-6 win over #16 seed Cazacu of Wayne State. Â In the round of 16, Alexeeva upset 2-seed Ballard of Grand Valley in two sets, 7-6 (0), 6-1. She then moved to the semis with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Prediger of Missouri-St. Louis, the bracket #13 seed. Alexeeva moved to the finals after a 6-3, 6-4 win over Parfundi of Maryville.
Maja Pindelska won the consolation portion of the A singles draw, after falling to the consolation bracket after a first-round loss. Â The St. Leo transfer, who entered the bracket as the 12-seed, suffered a three-set loss in her opening match Saturday, 4=6, 6-4, 10-5 to Wayne State's Liong. Pindelska then battled back through the consolation bracket, besting Saginaw Valley's McLaughlin 6-2, 6-3 in her first consolation match. She then defeated Walsh's Fernandez 6-2, 6-3 to move to the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket, where she she won 5-7, 6-0, 10-3 over Bell from Hillsdale. After a walkover of Skonieczny of Bellarmine in the semifinals, Pindelska won 6-2, 6-1 in the consolation final over Beidacki of Walsh.
Anya Novikova entered the bracket as the 8-seed, going 3-1 before a three-set loss in the A draw semifinals.
Anna Valiaeva also took a win in the bracket, defeating Sredojevic of Lewis 6-2, 6-1 before bowing out of the bracket with a second-round loss.
In the B singles draw,
Pam Brito Torres went 4-1. The UIndy sophomore made it all the way to the semifinals of the draw before taaking a loss to top-seeded Heiniger of Grand Valley. She counted a 6-1, 6-3 win over 6-seeded Prost of Hillsdale among her trio of victories on the tournament.
DOUBLES
The real fireworks came out in the A doubles bracket, with two UIndy doubles pairs running through the draw. The duo of Novikova and Alexeeva came out the winners, with the pair seeded fifth to open the tournament. Â The freshman pair upset top-seeded teammates Volikova and Pindelska in the final, 8-2, after three other wins in the tournament. Â Novikova and Alexeeva opened the event with an 8-3 win over the Walsh duo of Fernandez and Beidacki, and followed up with an 8-0 victory over Flight and Bere of Illinois Springfield. In the bracket quarterfinals, the freshmen won 8-5 over the bracket 4-seed of UMSL's Lunge and Beargrie, and then took an 8-2 win over Verebes and Paixao of Ferris State to earn their trip to the championship.
Volikova and Pindelska opened their tournament with an 8-2 win over Bellarmine's Skonieczny and Ratliff, and followed with another 8-2 win in the quarterfinals over Grand Valley's Ballard and Heiniger. Â In the semifinals, the pair took an 8-4 win over teammates
Chloe Weihs and Valiaeva, setting up the final match versus the Greyhound freshmen pair.
Weihs and Valiaeva took three wins prior to their loss to Volikova and Pindelska, as an unseeded entry into the A doubles draw.
With the bracket victories in singles and doubles, Alexeeva will compete at the ITA Oracle Cup in both draws, while she will be joined by Novikova in the doubles competition. This will be the third year running that a Greyhound singles player has advanced to the Oracle Cup, while it is the second year a UIndy women's doubles squad will make the Nationals trip. This year's Oracle Cup will be held Oct. 13-16 in Rome, Georgia.
