ON TAP
After only playing one of their two games last week in Missouri due to poor weather conditions, the UIndy women's basketball team returns to Nicoson Hall this weekend when another ranked team comes to town, the Lewis Flyers. The Hounds host the Flyers on Saturday afternoon before hitting the road for a rare Monday game with Missouri S&T to make up last week's missed game with the Miners.
Â
HOUNDS vs. FLYERS
UIndy and Lewis have already met this season. The Hounds visited the Flyers back in early December in Romeoville in each team's GLVC opener. UIndy led the then-ranked 24th Flyers by as much as 16 points in the third quarter before reigning GLVC player of the year Jessica Kelliher and her teammates staged a comeback to top the Hounds by five. The whole Lewis starting five scored in double figures while Kelliher led Lewis with seven boards.
Taylor Drury,
Emma Benoit, and
Laura Thomas all scored in double figures for UIndy with Drury leading the way with 18 points.
Liz Alsot flirted with a double-double in her first career conference game, coming off the bench for 10 points and nine rebounds in the loss.
Â
ABOUT LEWIS
The Flyers come to Nicoson Hall looking for a win after losing their last time out. Like UIndy, Lewis lost to Drury in their last game. The Flyers held the Panthers to under 28% from deep, but the Panthers forced 27 Lewis turnovers, turning those 27 errors into 21 points off turnovers and Drury came away with the 69-66 win on their home court. The Drury loss is the only GLVC loss Lewis has sustained so far this season after winning games against Truman, Quincy, and S&T in addition to UIndy since conference play commenced back in early December for the Flyers.
Â
Lewis is led by reigning conference player of the year, Jessica Kelliher. Kelliher currently leads the conference in scoring with 22.7 points per game and is fourth in the GLVC in rebounding, grabbing an average of 8.7 boards per contest. Kelliher is one of two players in the conference to rank top-five in both categories. Lewis leads the conference in blocked shots with 64 rejections on the year, their 4.27 blocks per game is second in the GLVC. Junior Morgan Glatczak leads the conference with 38 swats on the season, her two and a half blocks per game is second in the conference as well. Glatczak recorded six rejections in UIndy and Lewis' first meeting, she set a season-high two weeks later with seven swats against Michigan Tech.
Â
HOUNDS vs. MINERS
UIndy went on the road to Rolla last February and won one of their three conference road games on the year. The Hounds were lifted to the victory by
Claire Carlton's career day against the Miners. Carlton recorded her first career double-double in Rolla, scoring a career-high 20 points against S&T on a career-high four-of-seven three pointers. On top of 20 points, Carlton grabbed a then-career high 11 rebounds in the Greyhound win.
Â
ABOUT MISSOURI S&T
Having lost their last time out, Missouri S&T fell to Lewis, putting their overall record at 5-6. The Miners have gone 1-3 in GLVC play this season, their lone conference win on the road at Rockhurst by just two points. S&T and UIndy share two common opponent as of right now in the Ashland Eagles and Lewis. The Miners gave up 100 points on the scoreboard for the first time this season when they traveled up to Ashland to face the Eagles, losing that game by a score of 100-72.
Â
S&T has only two players averaging double figures in scoring this season. Junior forward Maddie Raley leads the Miners in scoring with 11.9 points per game on the season while freshman center Alex Kerr comes off the bench for the Miners and has been putting up over 11 points per game in her inaugural season. Junior center Mykala Baylor leads Missouri S&T in rebounding, Baylor has been averaging just under nine rebounds per contest this year to go along with her 9.2 points per game average. Baylor's 8.9 rebounds a night average is third in the GLVC in rebounding this season.
THREE HEADED SCORING MONSTER
Taylor Drury,
Laura Thomas, and
Emma Benoit all rank top 15 in the GLVC in points per game this season. Drury ranks sixth in the conference at 15.8 points per game, Thomas checks in at eighth with 14.1 PPG, and Benoit's 13.3 PPG is good for 14th in the league.
Â
DOUBLE TROUBLE
Emma Benoit has been a force down low for the Hounds this year. The Northern Michigan transfer has recorded three double-doubles in her first season for UIndy. Benoit's first double-double came against Tiffin back in November when she put up 25 points and 10 boards in just 23 minutes of play. She put up back-to-back double-doubles against Oakland City and Purdue Northwest when she went for 19 and 14 and then 23 and 11, respectively.
Â
CLEANING UP THE GLASS
UIndy has been owning the boards against their opponents this season. UIndy currently ranks fourth in the GLVC in defensive rebounding, pulling down 27 boards per contest this season. The Hounds rank sixth in the conference in rebounding margin (+3.5). This year's team is far superior on the boards than last year's squad, averaging more than seven rebounds per game and their +3.5 margin reigns over last year's -4.0 margin.
Â
SHARING IS CARING
The Hounds average nearly 15 assists per game this season, up over four assists per game from last season. UIndy's 14.7 assist per game average ranks sixth in the GLVC while their assist-to-turnover ratio (0.79) ranks ninth in the league.
Laura Thomas ranks top 10 in the conference in assists. Thomas' 3.6 helpers per game ranks eighth in the GLVC this season.
Â
IMMEDIATE IMPACT
Three true freshmen have come to campus and made an impact right away for the Greyhounds throughout the season.
Taylor Dillard made her first career start for UIndy against Ashland, scoring four points and dishing out five assists in 27 minutes.
Katie Sowa has back-to-back 20-point performances against Oakland City and Purdue Northwest going 17-of-25 from the field, including 10-of-13 from deep in those two games.
Liz Alsot has had three games in double figures, putting up a career-best 20 points against Lake Superior State just before Thanksgiving. Another true freshman,
Mya Scheidt, made her first-career field when she nailed a triple in the fourth quarter of last week's game at Drury.
Â
MAKING IT RAIN
The Greyhounds as a whole shooting from beyond the arc much better than they did a year ago. Last season, UIndy was shooting 27.5% from deep, they were shooting over 40% from deep for much of this season, but still sit at over 35% from three-point range this season. Two Hounds are near the top in two three-point shooting categories in the GLVC.
Taylor Drury ranks second in the league in almost three made triples a game, shooting 41.7% from deep (6th in GLVC). Freshman
Katie Sowa is fourth in the GLVC in three-point percentage, her 46.0% rate from beyond the arc.
Â
SPARKS WILL FLY
Senior
Jordan Cole made her season debut against Truman when the Hounds last played at home. The senior saw her first action since 11/19/17 against Northwood after fighting through multiple injuries. Cole entered the game in the final two minutes against Truman, immediately contributing for the Hounds. In her two minutes of action, Cole came down with a rebound and went coast-to-coast making a layup for her first points in over 13 months.
