Van Jaarsveld Wins Second GLVC Weekly Award

INDIANAPOLIS – Women's swimming & diving student-athlete Marizel van Jaarsveld was awarded the PNC GLVC Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week, as announced by league officials Wednesday. Van Jaarsveld came away from the annual House of Champions Invitational with more than a handful of stellar performances, as she qualified for the upcoming NCAA DII Swimming & Diving Championships in March in both individual events and relays.

Along the way, van Jaarsveld also took part in breaking six total UIndy school records. After owning the 200 and 400 IM records shortly after her UIndy opener, she bested both of those times and added another individual event in the process. Van Jaarsveld's 200 IM time in prelims of 1:59.95 broke her own record, placing sixth over in the meet at finals last Friday. The 400 IM provided both a record and an A-cut for van Jaarsveld, four seconds under her previous best time at UIndy at 4:15.77. That time eclipsed the automatic qualifying cut to the NCAA DII Swimming & Diving Championships by almost two seconds. Van Jaarsveld's final event that she won, the women's 200 fly, placed herself in an excellent position to qualify for another individual event in March, missing the automatic qualifying cut by five one-hundredths of a second. Marizel's 1:59.44 victory in the 200 fly also created history, marking the first time a UIndy women's swimming & diving student—athlete has broken the two-minute barrier in the process.

Van Jaarsveld also took part in several successful relays over the weekend, where her 1:01.28 breastroke split helped her 400 medley relay place second overall in the event. The combined 3:41.18 time was around five seconds under the NCAA Provisional standard, along with a UIndy record. Her next relay shone just as bright, four seconds under the 800 free relay Provisional standard and three more under UIndy's record on a final time of 7:25.66. In her final event, the women's 400 medley relay, van Jaarsveld's split of 50.3 brought the final UIndy women's school record and NCAA Provisional cut. The team's final time of 3:22.02 on the relay was another three and a half seconds under the NCAA standard.

The marks the second GLVC weekly honor for van Jaarsveld, her first coming back on Oct. 23. The Greyhounds have had another swimming & diving student-athlete win the award since then, as senior Edda Skoric won the honor the following week. The Greyhounds have had three total student-athlete of the week honors so far this season.
