Wrestling kicks off 2019-20 season Saturday

ST. LOUIS- The 63rd season of Greyhound Wrestling opens Saturday morning at Maryville's Kaufman Brand Open, with UIndy kicking off its season at one of five opens on its schedule.

The young Greyhounds feature a roster that includes 17 freshmen and two transfers among its 37 members.  Returning for the Hounds are a pair of two-time National Qualifers in senior Ana Abduljelil (2017-125; 2019-133) and redshirt Brody Conner (2018-184; 2019-184). Joining Abduljelil and Conner returning to the Greyhound starting lineup are redshirt senior Kyle Barkovich and sophomore Gleason Mappes.

Following Saturday's action in St. Louis, UIndy will head East to Findlay, Ohio, for the Findlay Open Nov. 16, before opening its dual slate with a trio of Division I opponents just up I-65 at Purdue Nov. 24. 

After Thanksgiving, the Greyhounds face their first Division II dual opponent in Urbana Dec. 4, before the annual Indiana Little State tournament at Marian Dec. 7.  The 41st annual Midwest Classic closes out the first semester for the Hounds, with 38 NCAA Division II teams planned to attend the year's highlight event.

UIndy opens the 2020 calendar year with a trip to Western Colorado Jan. 11, where the Hounds will see the host Mountaineers, Colorado-Pueblo, New Mexico Highlands and Colorado-Mesa. Findlay comes to town Jan. 15 for a mid-week dual, with the Hounds then opening Great Lakes Valley Conference action Jan. 19 at new league member Lindenwood. 

The Rangers of Wisconsin-Parkside keep the tough Division II competition coming with another dual in the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center Jan. 21, followed by Bellarmine coming to UIndy Jan. 25 for GLVC action. The homestand closes with Drury Feb. 1.

After a trip to dual Maryville Feb. 5, UIndy will host the Greyhound Duals Feb. 8 and the Greyhound Open Feb. 9. The Hounds will wrestle Tiffin, Davenport and Kentucky Wesleyan in dual action Feb. 8, and will also celebrate their Seniors that day.

The regular season closes with the conclusion of the GLVC slate Feb. 16 at Maryville, where UIndy will wrestle Ouachita Baptist and McKendree. The postseason begins in Nicoson Hall Feb. 29, as the Greyhounds have the pleasure of hosting the 2020 NCAA Division II Super Region 3 Tournament. The top 3 wrestlers in each weight class from each of the six Division II regions will then descend upon Sioux Falls, South Dakota, for the 2020 NCAA Division II National Championships Mar. 13-14.
