INDIANAPOLIS – Head coach
Jason Reed and the UIndy volleyball team announced more additions to the 2019 squad on Tuesday afternoon, with two more players joining the Greyhounds next semester.
Â
"I am thrilled for the addition of these two young women into our volleyball program," Reed said on Tuesday. "Both embody what we are looking for in terms of their character, hard work, and dedication."
Â
De'Janea Johnson comes to the Circle City from Elkhart Memorial in Elkhart, Ind., where she was a two-time all-conference player her final two seasons. As a senior this past fall, Johnson earned First-Team All-State honors with 326 kills on .228 hitting.
Â
"DJ is coming to us as a ball control outside hitter," Reed said of the Elkhart product. "Her heavy arm and great court vision supplement the great attitude and work ethic she will bring to our gym in the fall."
Â
As a prep, Johnson racked up 795 kills over 195 sets, adding 304 digs and 65 blocks. The outside hitter also earned letters in basketball, tennis, and track. Johnson is also a member of the National Honor Society, and has been a four-year honor roll student at Elkhart.
Â
"I'm confident DJ is going to help our group get better."
Â
Kyra Simmons will provide solid foundation in the middle, joining UIndy from William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. A senior All-Star representing the GMC conference, Simmons hit .375 on the attack this past fall, while racking up 137 kills.
Â
"Kyra is a long athletic middle who really fits well into our system," said Reed. "She's an amazing athlete who works really hard, which makes for the perfect combination to have as a middle blocker."
Â
The 6-0 middle helped William Mason to 61 wins over her three seasons on varsity, claiming two sectional titles. Simmons proved to a multi-sport athlete, as well, earning letters in basketball and track and field. As a member of the honor roll during her time as a prep, Simmons plans to major in Chemistry at UIndy.
Â
"I can't wait to see her compete in our gym."
Â
UIndy has now added six incoming players for the 2019 fall season.
