Men's Lax to Battle Top-Ranked Limestone in NCAA Semifinal

GAFFNEY, S.C. - The No. 6 UIndy men's lacrosse team travels down to No. 1 Limestone this coming Sunday in a battle to determine who will advance to the NCAA National Championship on Sunday, May 26, in Philadelphia.

The Saints downed the Greyhounds back on May 4 by the score of 18-11. Undefeated through 19 games this season, Limestone defeated Tampa last weekend to advance to the national semifinal. UIndy toppled No. 5 Belmont Abbey in overtime to earn its respective spot among the country's final four teams in DII men's lacrosse.

RUNNING OF THE HOUNDS
UIndy continues to make program history with each victory in 2019, and now sports a 16-2 record. The Greyhounds' previous record was 10 victories, which came a season ago, on the heels of the inaugural GLVC championship. UIndy claimed its second straight league title this season before earning the third seed in the NCAA South Regional.

SILVER LINING
The Greyhounds became the second-fastest team in NCAA Division II history to advance to the national semifinal in just their fourth season. Tampa, who began its men's lacrosse program in 2012, made the trip in its third season before falling to eventual-champion Limestone. Only eight teams – four from each region – earned a spot in the NCAA tournament until 2019, making UIndy the fastest school ever to win two games in postseason action.

OVERTIME OCCUPANTS
Four of the team's 18 games this season have required overtime, including three of the past six. The Greyhounds knocked off then-No. 3 Seton Hill in extra time back on February 16, before completing a seven-goal comeback against No. 13 Rockhurst to claim the regular-season conference title.

UIndy has needed overtime in each of the first two NCAA tournament victories: a 16-15 win over No. 13 Queens in the first round, and a 14-13 triumph at No. 5 Belmont Abbey in the quarterfinal. The win at Belmont Abbey avenged an early-season defeat by the Crusaders, one of the Greyhounds' two losses in 2019.

VERSUS RANKED OPPONENTS
The Greyhounds are 7-2 against ranked opponents this season, with losses coming at Belmont Abbey and Limestone.

Among its seven wins, UIndy has defeated Belmont Abbey, Lindenwood, Mercyhurst, Queens, Rockhurst (twice), and Seton Hill. The wins over Lindenwood and Rockhurst came during regular-season in-region battles, while the Greyhounds have downed Belmont Abbey and Queens in the NCAA tournament.

UIndy's victories against Mercyhurst and Seton Hill were out-of-region games played before conference action began in March.

ABOUT THE SAINTS
Limestone has been atop the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) since April 15, and are currently 19-0 this season. The Saints have racked up 12 wins over ranked opponents, including UIndy on May 4 to close the regular season.

The Saints have appeared in 11 national championship games since 2000, having claimed five titles during that span. Limestone made four straight trips to the title tilt from 2014-17.

Larson Sundown leads the Saints in scoring this season, totaling 102 points on 63 goals and 39 assists. Sundown, who was an NJCAA First-Team All-American in 2017, earned Conference Carolinas Offensive Player of the Year in his first season at Limestone in 2019. Tyler Papa and Clark Walter have also tallied more than 60 points for the Saints.

Danny Forren has started 18 games between the pipes for Limestone this season, allowing just 8.24 goals per game and stopping 57.8 percent of opponents' shots on goal.

As a team, Limestone leads NCAA Division II in virtually every category, including scoring offense, scoring margin, assists per game, points per game, and ground balls per game.

THEM, THE NORTH
Up on the north side of the bracket, No. 2 Le Moyne and defending-champion Merrimack will square off on Saturday to determine the first team to advance to the 2019 national title game. Riding a 10-game winning streak, Le Moyne hosts Merrimack in the teams' third contest of the season.

Merrimack downed Le Moyne back on March 23, 12-11. Each game was determined by goal, as the Dolphins' victory was also by a 12-11 score on May 1.

GREYHOUND LEADERS
Parker Kump ranks 10th in NCAA Division II with 3.33 goals per game, while he in 19th with 4.5 points per contest.

Robbie Berardi has posted a .654 clip at the faceoff x, ranking 11th in the country among specialists. The junior's 7.89 ground balls per game clip also ranks 11th in DII.

As a team, UIndy has scooped up 662 ground balls for eighth-most in the nation. After Berardi's 142 scoops, Erich Wiitala (58) and Jack Belobrajdic (50) ranks second and third, respectively, on the team.
