23 UIndy Greyhounds
at 1 Bellarmine Knights
Monday, Jan. 20, 8 p.m. ET, Louisville, Ky.
ON TAP
Facing its second straight top-25 opponent, the No. 23 Greyhounds travel to Louisville, Ky., Monday night to face the top-ranked Bellarmine Knights. The trip will mark the final regular-season contest between the conference rivals, as Bellarmine is transitioning to Division I starting in 2020-21.
ABOUT BELLARMINE
Competing in their final season as a Division II institution, the Knights are in midst of another stellar season. At 14-0, Bellarmine is the last remaining unbeaten in DII and are currently the unanimous No. 1 in the
DII coaches poll.
BU is a remarkably balanced and disciplined group, ranking second in the nation in field goal percentage, third in scoring defense, fifth in fewest personal fouls and seventh in turnover margin. Individually, three Knights average at least 13 points per game. Senior Alex Cook leads the team in both scoring (15.5 ppg) and rebounding (6.3 rpg) while also ranking second in DII in free throw percentage (.936).
HOUNDS vs. KNIGHTS
Bellarmine got the best of UIndy in December at Nicoson Hall,
71-69, winning its ninth of the past 12 meetings between the GLVC charter members. The Knights' Dylan Penn scored the go-ahead bucket with just under six seconds remaining, forcing UIndy senior
Jimmy King to toss up a desperation 3-pointer that came up short.
Overall, Bellarmine leads the all-time series, 59-46, including wins in the last five meetings in Knights Hall. The last Greyhound victory in Louisville came on Jan. 16, 2014 in a
81-79 final -- BU's first loss that season.
LAST TIME OUT
UIndy's unrelenting schedule continued over the weekend, as the Hounds traveled to River City to challenge No. 18 Missouri-St. Louis. Off to their best start ever, the Tritons (15-2, 6-1) used a 10-0 midway through the second half to take their first lead of the day. Seven ties and five leads changes followed, but the Greyhounds managed just two points in the final five minutes as UMSL hung on for the
69-66 win.
Senior
Jordache Mavunga led the Greyhounds with 16 points, while sophomore
Jacob Polakovich recorded his second double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Senior
Jimmy King added 14 points as nine assists, upping his league-leading average to 6.8 assists per game.
KING JAMES
In addition to his well-deserved reputation as a distributor and a leader,
Jimmy King has also been a go-to scoring option in his time as a Greyhound. With 10 points in UIndy's win versus then-20th-ranked USI on Jan. 9, the hometown product became the 42nd player in program history to reach 1,000 career points.
Additionally, King is fourth in program history with 454 career assists. Only program-leader Ron Rutland (547 assists) has ever surpassed the 500 mark as a Hound.
LIVING LEGACY
UIndy freshman guard
Ben Nicoson is a fourth-generation Greyhound, following in the footsteps of Angus (great grandfather), Dan (grandfather) and Brent (father). Nicoson Hall, home of UIndy basketball, is named after Angus, who is the program's all-time wins leader as a coach with 483 victories. Father
Brent is Greyhound head golf coach, leading the UIndy women to national titles in both 2015 amd '18.
Ben is currently averaging 7.5 minutes per game in his freshman season, and drew his first-ever start against Lake Superior State back on Dec. 17.
