Greyhound Rewind: Clutch Free Throws Lift Hounds to Season-Opening Win

With the athletics calendar still upended, we throw it back with another Greyhound Rewind. Exactly two years ago today, the UIndy women's basketball team downed Hillsdale College in the season opener, thanks to a pair of free throws by Laura Thomas with two ticks left on the clock. Below is a recap from Nov. 10, 2018.

HILLSDALE, Mich. – Not only did she impress in her UIndy debut, junior transfer Laura Thomas sealed the game for the Hounds (1-0) in the waning seconds with a pair of free throws to knock off Hillsdale College (0-1), 69-67, in the season opener on Saturday.

Thomas logged a team-high 35 minutes, recording a game-best 20 points, while sinking all eight attempts from the charity stripe.

HOW IT HAPPENED
It was a big second half that kept the Greyhounds in the game against the host Chargers, shooting 54.5 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes. Nine of Thomas' 11 second-half points came in the fourth quarter, the final of which from the free-throw line with two seconds remaining.

Emma Benoit finished with 18 points and seven boards in her first game as a Hound, including 14 second-half points to help propel UIndy to victory. The Gilberts, Ill., product put the Hounds on top twice in the final three minutes, scoring seven points in the fourth quarter.

With 1:26 on the clock, the Chargers snagged a one-point advantage before Thomas drilled a 3-pointer. However, Hillsdale refused to surrender on its home floor, knotting the game on two separate occasions in the final 46 seconds prior to Thomas' free throws.

Mickey Sasson was integral in the Hounds leading at halftime, recording eight points and six rebounds prior to the break. The newcomer, and twin sister of Shira Sasson, finished with 10 and seven, respectively.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
-Thomas is the first Greyhound to score at least 20 points in her debut since Sydney Brackemyre in 2016.
-The Hounds scored 34 points in the paint for the second straight game, dating back to last season against Parkside.
-The team's 49.1 FG% is the best single-game mark since March 3, 2017 at Southern Indiana.

HOUND BYTES
Head coach Kristin Wodrich…
"It was a game of runs, and we came away with the last one. The girls stayed together the whole game; we'll get back to film and keep trying to get better every game."

MORE NOTES
