Today, we throw it back to 2019 with another Greyhound Rewind. Cross country phenom Lauren Bailey cemented her status as a UIndy all-time great with her performance at the NCAA DII Championships. Relive the moment with the original recap from Nov. 23, 2019.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior
Lauren Bailey etched her name in the Greyhound record books Saturday with an historic showing at the NCAA DII Cross Country Championships, held at Arcade Creek Course in Sacramento, Calif. After setting a program best two weeks ago with a top-three finish at the
Midwest Regional, Bailey finished ninth at Nationals to become the first-ever Greyhound to earn All-America accolades in the sport.
"It was a perfect day for Lauren to utilize her strengths on the course," explained head coach Brad Robinson. "She committed to some tough moves in the second half of the race, and it was as close as perfect as you could get."
Bailey's All-America performance started strong, sliding into the 10th-place spot after the first mile on a 5:17.2 split. The Westfield, Ind., native's consistent and balanced pace boded well for her throughout the race, finishing strong in the final kilometer to end the 6K race with a time of 20:27.9, good for ninth place among the nation's best.
"This not only has put Lauren up in the same level as the best in the nation," said Robinson, "but this is a huge step for building the foundation of our team. Next year we'll look to bring both the men's and the women's teams to the national championships."
