Hounds Win 7th Straight in Split with Wayne State

DETROIT, MI – The University of Indianapolis baseball team picked up an 8-4 win over Wayne State University to extend their win streak to seven on Saturday.  A ninth-inning rally from the Warriors in the night cap sent the game to extra innings where the Hounds fell 8-7 in 10 innings.

GAME 1 | UIndy 8, WSU 4
Wayne State got on the board first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first.  UIndy cut the deficit to one in the top of the second with Isaac Bair scoring on a wild pitch.

Hunter Waning laid down a single in centerfield in the fifth, allowing Trey Smith to score and even the game at two.  The Hounds broke open the game in the sixth after plating five runs, all with two outs.  The Hounds scored a pair of runs on wild pitches and a third on a passed ball.  With Alex Vela on second, Smith singled to left field, bringing home Vela.  Brandon DeWitt drove in the final run of the inning with a RBI single to center.

The Warriors responded with one run in the fifth to cut UIndy's lead to four but the Hounds added an insurance run in the top of the ninth after Ty Williams laced a RBI single to right field.

Reid Werner picked up his third win on the mound, striking out four and allowing six hits and three runs in 7.0 innings.  Johnny Irish closed out the final two innings, allowing one run off of three hits while striking out two.

DeWitt finished three-for-five in game one while Smith and Caleb Vaughn picked up a pair of hits.

GAME 2 | UIndy 7, WSU 8 (10 inns)
The Hounds held a four run lead in the fourth after RBI singles from Williams, Waning and Vela plus a RBI double from DeWitt.  Williams drove in the final run with a sac fly to put UIndy ahead 5-1.

Wayne State put two runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 5-3 ballgame.  With two runners in scoring position and two outs in the seventh, DeWitt lined a double down the left field line, scoring Vela and Reid Rector to extend the Hounds lead to 7-3.

The Warriors got one back in the bottom of the eighth to cut the lead to three.  With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, a bases clearing double tied the game at seven.  It was déjà vu in the bottom of the tenth as Wayne State took the game in walk off fashion with a two-out single with two runners on.

Corey Bates allowed seven hits and three runs while striking out four in 5.1 innings of work.  Xavier Rivas threw 2.0 innings, striking out three and allowing one run.  Wyatt Phillips took the loss with 0.2 innings, two hits and one run.

Vela and Bair both finished game two three-for-four at the plate.  DeWitt went two-for-five with three RBI.
