NDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy Baseball Team will travel to St. Charles, Mo. this weekend where they will begin their try at the Great Lakes Valley Conference title. The Hounds will open the 2021 GLVC Baseball Championship against the number three seeded Rockhurst at 10 a.m. ET.
The Greyhounds hold an overall record of 21-19 and a conference record of 19-13.
"It's been evident over the course of the regular season that we are able to score runs in a variety of ways," said Head Coach Al Ready. "We've gotten some really good performances out of our starting pitching down the stretch and our pitching staff as a whole has been giving us a really good chance to win each time,"
FEVER PITCH
Senior
Reid Werner has continued his reign of power on the Mound for the Greyhounds. With a record of 7-2 on the season and appearing in 12 matchups, Werner has posted a stellar five complete games for the Hounds and struck out 81 batters in 84.1 innings pitched – leading the GLVC in innings pitched. Werner has given up 26 earned runs over the course of the season and has walked only 10 at the plate.
"Reid has had an incredible season for us," Ready noted.
Werner finds himself in fifth in the GLVC with a 2.77 ERA, The seniors energy fuels the Hounds on and off the field. If not pitching, Werner can be found howling at the top of his lungs at his teammates during all moments of a Hounds matchup.
Corey Bates follows suit with 65 strikeouts on the season in 68.2 innings pitched. The Hounds show depth in the bullpen with
Alec Burnett,
Matt Rearick, and
Chaney Morgan posting notable performances for the Greyhounds.
OUT OF THE PARK
Trey Smith lived up to his 2020 reputation of being a slugger in the 2021 campaign, with a .395 batting average, the Junior has racked up six homeruns, seven doubles, and three triples in 36 games as the leadoff batter for the Hounds. Smith has contributed a team high 34 RBI in his 129 at bats, including leading the team in 51 hits.
John Carpinelli emerged at the plate with four homers, seven doubles, and two triples in 2021. Carpinelli has found a way on base through 24 hits and being walked a team high 32 times.
Alex Vela,
Hunter Waning, and
Brandon DeWitt have proven to be forces for the Hounds offensively as well.
The Hounds have posted 18 out of parkers in the 2021 season, along with 184 RBI.
SCOUTING ROCKHURST
The Hawks have compiled a 23-17 overall record, with a 20-16 record in the GLVC. The are averaging a .372 on base percentage, while holding opponents to .394. Rockhurst has posted 22 homers throughout the season, and 337 hits.
