Homecoming Win Sees Clinton Continue Record-Setting Ways

INDIANAPOLIS—The UIndy football team celebrated Homecoming with a 44-17 win against Southwest Baptist Saturday night at Key Stadium. In the Greyhounds' 11th consecutive Homecoming victory, senior running back Toriano Clinton set a pair of major program marks versus the Bearcats in the GLVC opener for both teams.

A week after setting the school record for career rushing yards, Clinton continued his assault on the UIndy record books. He amassed 207 yards and three touchdowns (2 rush, 1 rec) Saturday night on the way to becoming the program's career leader in both rushing TDs and total touchdowns.

Additionally, Clinton became the first-ever Greyhound to eclipse 4,000 career rushing yards. He is currently the Division II active leader in the category with 4,155 yards to his credit.

INS & OUTS
After trading punts in the early going, the Greyhounds put nine quick points on the board late in the first quarter and ultimately never trailed. Defensive lineman Dylan Shelton got the Hounds on the scoreboard with a five-yard sack that went for a safety – UIndy's second in as many home games.

On the ensuing UIndy possession, Clinton took the next play from scrimmage 63 yards to the house, breaking the UIndy total touchdown record in the process.

Later, the Bearcats scored the first touchdown of the second half to make it 23-14. But the Hounds responded with a 10-play, 71-yard drive to retake the momentum. SBU did not get closer than 13 points the rest of the way, while UIndy tacked on a pair of fourth quarter TDs to pull away.

Defensive end Aaron Barnett led the Greyhounds with a career-high nine tackles, with three-and-half going for a loss. Shelton added a second sack to his total; while defensive backs Brandon Thomas, Khoreice Crawford and Kivonte Houston each garnering a pick.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
-QB Connor Kinnett notched his first (and later his second) career rushing touchdown in the contest. He threw the ball just 13 times, completing seven for 94 yards and a touchdown.
-Lenny Bennett also got in the scoring column, as his 11-yard TD rush late in the first half was good for his first TD of the season.
-Clinton netted his sixth career 200-yard rushing game, most in UIndy history.
-UIndy held SBU running back Abel Carter to just 50 yards rushing, nearly 100 yards under his average. He came into the night ranked fourth in Division II in rushing yards per game.

MORE NOTES
Clinton's pair of touchdown records put him ahead of two Greyhound greats. He surpassed Klay Fietcher (2010-13) and his 46 career TDs while also leapfrogging former-teammate Al McKeller (2017-19) and his 42 rushing TDs … UIndy upped its head-to-head record versus Southwest Baptist to 7-1 and are now 11-1 all-time in GLVC openers.

UP NEXT
UIndy returns to the road for two straight contests away from Key Stadium, starting with a trip to McKendree University Saturday, October 8.
