Box Score EDMOND, Okla. – Sunday late in the Edmond Center Court, the No. 2-ranked UIndy women's tennis team took on a semifinal matchup against the three-seeded and No. 3-ranked University of Central Oklahoma in a to-the-wire finish which landed in favor of the Bronchos, 4-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In similar fashion to yesterday's match, the Greyhounds started with a hill to climb as they quickly found themselves down 1-0 after doubles.
Maissane Aik and
Maria Solnyshkina opened well for the Hounds as they sprinted to a 6-4 win. The Bronchos fought right back with a 6-4 win over
Isabella Dunlap and
Sofia Sharonova in the No. 2 doubles spot to even the score. Finally it came down to a tiebreak match in the No. 1 doubles slot as Ariana Amaning and
Anna Novikova fought but eventually fell after a seven-point tiebreak.
Singles opened well for the Bronchos as they took down Novikova in straight sets 6-1, 6-0.
Kristina Lagoda followed to keep the Hounds in the match with a resounding straight-sets win 6-0, 6-2 making it 2-1 Bronchos.
Following Lagoda's win, Aik lost in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 putting the Greyhounds down 3-1. But similar to yesterday, the team did not quit. They fought back with a quality win by Dunlap in the No. 2 singles slot.
Lea Cakarevic put on yet another strong performance in the No. 6 singles spot. After starting set one down 6-3, she kicked into another gear for set two, capturing the win 6-2. And in set three the young Greyhound was just faster than the Broncho as she sprinted to a 6-1 win to even the match at three-all..
Once again it fell in the hands of Amaning. She fell in set one 6-4 but not without a fight. Set two the momentum switched in the favor of Amaning as she won 6-2. It all came down to set three and with a trip to the ITA finals on the line, Amaning jumped out early with a 2-1 lead. Grace Chadwick evened the score and retook the lead at 3-2 with a dominant fifth game. Amaning replicated that with a crushing set-six win. It went back and forth from there as Amaning dropped the next game and took the one right after leaving it 4-4. Chadwick however iced the match and sent the Broncos to the Championship with two game wins in a row.
