INDIANAPOLIS – Star left-handed pitcher Xavier Rivas headlined the recently released GLVC postseason award list by being named as the 2022 GLVC Pitcher of the Year, conference officials announced on Wednesday. Rivas also collected first team All-GLVC honors while Brandon DeWitt and Alex Vela each found a spot on the second team.
 
Rivas has rode this season as one of the top pitchers in the NCAA Division II. The Portage, Indiana native has tallied 117 strikeouts in 73-1/3 innings pitched for a 14.36 strikeouts per nine innings average. Earlier this season, Rivas carried an eight game streak of striking out double-digit batters in a game and has tallied 10 or more Ks in nine of his 11 appearances this year. As of today, he currently sits second on the UIndy baseball single season strikeout leaderboard only behind legendary Bill Bright. Rivas is the first Greyhound to win Pitcher of the Year since 2015 and just the third overall in program history.
 
UIndy also saw recognition on the second team as DeWitt and Vela each found a spot after their solid performances this season. DeWitt, who has traded time in the outfield and on the mound this year, has tallied a team-high .367 batting average alongside 65 hits, 43 runs scored, and 21 RBIs. From the mound, he has dealt 31-1/3 innings of work with 19 strikeouts and the Hounds second-lowest WHIP of 1.34. Vela, who has managed a team-leading .528 slugging percentage, tallied 34 hits at the dish alongside 24 RBIs and a team-high 12 doubles.
 
Vela was also recognized as the James R. Spalding Sportsmanship award winner for UIndy. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees are now eligible to become one of their school's two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners.
