Good afternoon, Greyhound Fans and welcome back to Around the Pound. After a brief hiatus, your weekly stop for all things Greyhound Athletics is back. Make sure to come to UIndyAthletics.com every Monday to see all the good news.
SOFTBALL
The No. 9-ranked UIndy softball team is continuing to roll on in spring, carrying a massive 10-game winning streak after picking up three wins to open up their conference play this past week. The Greyhounds opened their conference slate with a trip west, to Springfield, Ill. where they battled the Illinois-Springfield Prairie Stars, taking both games. Shelby Cook, the freshman out of Murphysboro, Ill., continues to rake, hitting the go ahead homer in game two of the doubleheader.
Kenzee Smith, sitting at 16-3 on the season, has been electric and that continued as the Hounds faced Lewis. In game one of the soon to be rained out doubleheader against the Flyers, she flirted with perfection, sitting down the first 17 batters of the contest. He ended the day with just three hits allowed and four strikeouts in the seven-inning contest.
WOMEN'S GOLF
At one of the biggest tournaments in the Barry Invite which saw some of the best teams from around the nation, the Greyhounds showed up, finishing runner up while Elyse Stasil and Anci Dy both finished in the top-20. Stasil ended her rounds in fourth, tying for the birdies lead with 11 on the week. For her efforts, Stasil was elected GLVC Women's Golf Player of the Week
WOMEN'S LACROSSE
The reigning national champions have continued to roll this season. After falling the week prior, the Hounds bounced back bit against Northern Michigan, racking up 18 goals in the mid-week battle. Anna Ziemba and Joey Fowler were a large part of the Hounds offense, scoring five and four apiece. They followed that offensive onslaught with another in their GLVC opener, beating the Lewis Flyers 22-8. Ziemba was once again the Hounds leading scorer, netting seven while Jess Soenen put four away.
MEN'S LACROSSE
Led by GLVC and National Player of the Week Drew Billig, the Hounds have mounted a three game winning streak, the latest coming via a 13-12 GLVC-opening thriller in Romeoville, Ill. Nick Randgaard, with ice in his veins, netted his second game-winner of the season. Triston Schaffer was solid from the offensive side of the ball, grabbing five goals while Wyatt Auyer netted four.
BASEBALL
The win column continues to evade the Greyhounds, dropping a single game against the Findlay Oilers on Tuesday and suffering a sweep from the UIS Prairie Stars on the weekend moving the Hounds to 11-9. Drew Donaldson continues to hit the ball well, grabbing multiple extra base hits over the four game stretch against the Prairie Stars, including a two-run home run in game four.
