Welcome back, Greyhound Nation! We hope you had a great memorial day weekend because the Hounds certainly did. Read about all the great news here on Around the Pound, coming to you almost every Monday.
BASEBALL
The UIndy Greyhounds are regional champs once again! The Hounds, as one of the hottest teams in the college baseball world, upsetted back-to-back-to-back ranked foes in the regional and then the super regional to punch their ticket to Cary. N.C. for the NCAA Championship.
UIndy upended No. 16 Illinois Springfield, 25th-ranked Maryville and finally the No. 6 Quincy Hawks on the way to becoming the first-ever 7-seed in the super regional era to make the NCAA DII Championship. The feat was good for the program's third regional crown, with the first two coming in 2000 and 2012.
The official NCAA DII Baseball Championship bracket has been revealed and the Greyhounds will face off against No. 7-ranked Millersville in the first round of the tournament. The two squads will battle on June 3rd, at 6 p.m. ET at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C. The tournament will be a double elimination format with eight teams from across the country battling for the big trophy.
TRACK & FIELD
The UIndy outdoor track & field teams wrapped up the 2023 outdoor season at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships on the campus of CSU Pueblo this weekend. The top headline of the weekend saw Zoe Pentecost garner All-America honors in the women's hammer throw on Friday afternoon.
SOFTBALL
After another high-quality season, the Hounds have garnered a plethora of awards. Junior Kenzee Smith joined an exclusive group Wednesday, picking up her third consecutive All-America nod. The hometown product was included on a pair of All-America Teams, earning second-team accolades from the NFCA and third-team from the D2CCA. She becomes one of five players in program history to garner at least three All-America accolades from the coaches and one of just three to do so from the sports information directors.
Led by Head Coach Melissa Frost, the UIndy softball coaches were voted the 2023 ATEC/NFCA Division II Midwest Region Coaching Staff of the Year, as selected by the region's coaches. The honor marks the fifth time in the last 12 years that Frost and Co. were named the Midwest's top staff.
