INDIANAPOLIS – UIndy and Rockhurst split both games of Saturday's doubleheader, with the Greyhounds taking game one 13-9, and the Hawks snagging game two 9-6. This is the first doubleheader these two teams have split since
2015.
Bret Perry and
Brayton Bowen headed the Greyhounds' offense today going a combined 7-of-10, reaching base 13 times and raking in 10 RBIs. Bowen hit the Hounds' third grand slam of the weekend, which included two in yesterday's contests from
Gavin Duran and
Joey Humphrey.
GAME 1 | UIndy 13, Rockhurst 9
UIndy got things going early, knocking in eight runs in the first two innings including a trio of bases loaded walks in the first, and Bowen's grand slam to deep left field which capped off the eight runs early on for the Hounds. Bowen's grand slam is his first since
last season's home run off the UIndy bubble against Lewis on Senior Day.
Rockhurst was able to cut into the Hounds' lead after five, keeping UIndy's lead at only two, 9-7, but
Austin Bode,
Carter Thomas and Perry were able to drive home four more runs in the bottom of the sixth to push the lead back out to six, 13-7. Bode hit a two-run triple to drive in runs 12 and 13, and marked the seventh triple of his career in the Crimson and Grey.Â
Drake Downing and
Griffin Hallahan were able to salt the game away in relief over the final three innings, only allowing two runs combined between the two pitchers along with three hits, and four punch outs from Downing. The two relievers lead the Hounds in appearances this season with 20, with 12 from Downing and eight from Hallahan.
With a strong relief effort and hot bats, UIndy was able to take game two of the weekend's four game series, 13-9 over the Hawks.Â
GAME 2 | UIndy 6, Rockhurst 9
While game one was an offensive slug fest, game two was a sort of pitchers dual for much of the early part of the contest. Rockhurst threw its freshman ace, Keller Costello, for the first 4 1/3 innings, and only allowed two runs on two hits while striking out five. The Greyhounds on the other hand started
Kaleb Marrs on the bump for the seventh time this season, letting him toss 5 1/3 innings with three punch outs.Â
But on the other side of the ball, the Hawks took an early 3-0 lead after three successive runs in the third inning, but was matched by a solo shot from Bode to left field to regain some of the momentum lost.
The momentum was quickly halted as tensions had already been rising through three innings, and Bode was tossed immediately following the home run by the first base umpire. The teams traded runs in the fourth inning before a solo shot in the fifth and a three-run shot in the sixth from the Hawks' Josh Syfert extended the lead to six, 8-2. Similarly to Bode, Syfert was also tossed from the game following his home run, showing the culmination of the tensions from today's second game.Â
Down six headed into the bottom half of the seventh, the Hounds made a late push with a bases loaded two RBI double from Perry and a
Joey Humphrey RBI, but came up just short after a fly out from
Carter Thomas ended the game, 9-6, with a runner on third.Â
