INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 3 UIndy women's lacrosse team mounted an impressive five-goal comeback on Friday afternoon to shock the No. 9 Maryville Saints, 13-12.Â
The Greyhounds only led twice the entire game, and two goals in the final 45 seconds from Malaena Michielin capped off the unlikeliest of regulation comeback wins for the Hounds. The five goal comeback matches the Greyhounds' largest comeback in program history, which last happened in 2018.
These two teams are no strangers to close contests, with three of the last four games between the Saints and Greyhounds being determined by two goals or less.
INS & OUTS
Things began rocky for the Hounds with Maryville jumping out to a quick 4-0 lead just seven minutes into the first quarter, the Hounds' largest deficit of the season. But following a timeout by head coach Peyton Romig, Olivia Bladon traded a pair of goals with the Saints to end the first, keeping the deficit at four.
Following the six goal barrage from the Saints, the Hounds needed to find a way to flip the momentum, and did just that with a trio of goals in the second period from the Preseason All-Americans Bladon and Sage Da Silva, as well as Michielin to cut the lead to two, 7-5. A pair of draw controls from Bladon and Reese Fahlke set up goals four and five for the Hounds, who ultimately combined for 12 draw controls on the day.
UIndy continued to chip away at the Saints' lead by forcing five turnovers in the third, its most in a quarter today, and cutting the lead to one. A pair of caused turnovers from Michielin, and a caused turnover from Hollis Rang led to three UIndy goals in the third, including two from the freshman Fahlke, and Ella Fornek, who scored her fourth goal in five games today.
Trailing by one headed to the final 15, a save by Ava Graham, who tailed eight on the day, and a pair of green cards from Maryville, allowed the Hounds to take its first lead of the game with 11 minutes left of the clock on two woman-up goals from Bladon and Da Silva. The Saints found the equalizer just two minutes later to square things at 11, setting up for a back-and-forth affair over the final nine minutes. Two free position attempts from Paige Murphy were denied by Graham and the post, but Murphy would not be denied as she found the back of the net with just over two minutes to go.
With its back against the wall, UIndy needed two goals in two minutes to steal the win, and did just that with two goals from Michielin in the final 45 seconds including her shot with 11 seconds left that rang off the bar and into the back of the net to secure the 13-12 Greyhound win.
