INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Indianapolis and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics
Kim Pate announced
Steve Simmons as the next head coach of the UIndy men's and women's golf programs on Friday. The former Marian University head men's golf coach and longtime Zionsville, Ind., coach and educator comes to UIndy with a wealth of experience and success at both the college and high school levels.
"I am very excited to become part of one of the best Division II golf programs in the country," said Simmons. "When you look at the history, the success, and what golf has meant to the University of Indianapolis community, there is a great deal of pride and responsibility to uphold the standard."

A two-time Crossroads League Coach of the Year, Simmons spent the previous three seasons leading the men's team at crosstown Marian to its most successful stretch in program history. He guided the Knights to 17 tournament wins during his tenure, including three consecutive Crossroads titles. His teams advanced to nationals all three seasons, capped by a program-record fourth-place finish at the 2026 NAIA National Championship, good for the highest-ever national finish by a Crossroads League school.
In addition to his recent stint as a highly successful collegiate coach, Simmons can draw from over three decades of experience as a high school head coach. The former president of the Indiana High School Golf Coaches Association was the varsity boys' golf coach at local Zionsville High School from 2005-23, guiding Zionsville to four Hoosier Crossroads Conference championships while earning HCC Coach of the Year laurels in 2011, '15, '18 and '21. He mentored the 2013 IHSAA state champion in Adam Wood, who went on to earn All-ACC and All-America Scholar honors at Duke University. Simmons also pioneered the girls' golf program at Zionsville Middle School. He coached both middle school squads from 1997 to 2006 and also led the girls' high school team in 2019.
"
Steve Simmons has established himself as one of the premier golf coaches in the region through a sustained record of competitive excellence, exceptional leadership, and an unwavering commitment to developing student-athletes of character," said Director of Intercollegiate Athletics
Kim Pate. "His success at every level speaks for itself, but what impressed me most throughout this process was his passion for building a championship culture that extends well beyond tournament results. Steve understands that our number one goal is to prepare graduates for success in life, and he shares our belief that excellence in the classroom, on the course, and in the community are all essential components of that journey.
"We are thrilled to welcome Steve back to UIndy and are confident he will sustain the proud tradition of Greyhound golf, that we have all come to appreciate and respect."
Beyond his tactical acumen on the course, Simmons is a dedicated educator who prioritizes character, academic success, and personal growth. Since 1994, he has worked as a Wellness Educator within Zionsville Community Schools and has directed the Eagle Golf Camps & Clinics since 1997, introducing the game of golf to over 5,000 youth in the region.
Added Simmons: "
Kim Pate has given me a clear vision of what UIndy expects for the golf program. My goal is to work as hard as I can to bring in student-athletes with high character and be part of our culture. I'm a firm believer in what our culture will become and how it will benefit our players and ultimately be a catalyst for success. I can't wait to get started."
Simmons began his educational career as a Greyhound, attending UIndy before finishing out his undergraduate degree at Marian University. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education & Health and later earned a Master of Science in Curriculum and Instruction at Nova Southeastern University.
What they're saying about Coach Simmons…
Tony Pancake, Director of Golf at Crooked Stick Golf Club
"Coach
Steve Simmons is a perfect match to continue the national success of the UIndy golf programs. His leadership, experience and past success have prepared him for this incredible opportunity. I've had the privilege of seeing the positive impact Steve has had on his players as he coached my kids at Zionsville High School. He had an incredible influence on both their golf development and more importantly life lessons including character, integrity and teamwork. I look forward to following the Greyhounds success for years to come.
Adam Wood, Former Indiana high school state champ and Duke University standout
"Coach Simmons created a golf experience for me that included success, fun, memories, and great relationships. He will do the same for UIndy. He brings a wealth of experience and has my full support behind his coaching expertise. I consider him to be a great friend and one of the reasons why golf has been such an important part of my life. The memories we made in his program are some of my fondest memories that I take with me wherever I go."
