Sixth-inning rally too much for Hounds

BOX SCORE

INDIANAPOLIS – After two tough losses yesterday, the University of Indianapolis baseball team dropped a third game to Ashland at Greyhound Park Sunday. The Eagles rode a five-run sixth inning to the 8-5 victory while dropping UIndy to a game under .500 on the season.

Down 2-1, the Greyhounds (5-6) rallied for a four-spot in the bottom of the second. Eric Rieker got things going with a base hit to right and after Andrew Armour earned a free pass, Adam Akin hit a shot up the middle that hit the bag and allowed Rieker to score. Chase Kittinger followed with an RBI single to the opposite field before Ben Sondgeroth found the gap with a two-run double.

The Eagles (4-2) got those runs back and more with a flurry of hits in the sixth. Ashland faced three different pitchers in the frame and scored four of its five runs with two outs. Travis Kempton, who eventually earned the loss, took the worst of it by walking two and allowing two hits without recording an out.

UIndy looked to rally in the seventh when Armour led off the inning with a double, but he was erased on a fielder's choice from the next batter. With one down and a runner on first, John Dury came on in a pinch and sent a rocket back to the pitcher only to see it snagged for 1-3 double play.

Kittinger (pictured) finished the game with two hits, a run scored and one driven in. Sondgeroth was the only other Greyhound with multiple hits as he too recorded a pair.

UIndy travels to Oakland City next weekend for three games with the Mighty Oaks and one neutral-field match-up versus Hillsdale.
