Softball makes it 11 straight with sweep of Rockhurst

UIndy 10, Rockhurst 3
UIndy 3, Rockhurst 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The UIndy softball team added to their win streak by sweeping Great Lakes Valley Conference opponent Rockhurst University on Monday afternoon in Kansas City.  The Hounds earned 10-3 and 3-2 victories over the Hawks to push their win streak to 11 games, one shy of the school record.

Megan Russell led the way for the Greyhounds in the opener, finishing with a pair of hits, including 3 RBIs, and picked up the victory in the circle after tossing seven innings and striking out 10 Rockhurst batters.

After two scoreless innings, UIndy took a commanding lead by pushing six runs across in the top half of the third.  Carmen Martinez and Chrissy Stephens each provided a pair of RBIs in the inning as the Greyhounds took advantage of walks and wild pitches to take a 6-0 lead.

The host Hawks cut the lead in half by plating three runs in their half of the frame on three hits.  Jennifer DeMotte cut down a runner at the plate for the second out of the inning and Russell notched one of her 10 strikeouts to limit the Rockhurst rally.

The Hounds pushed their margin back to six, answering with a trio of runs in the top of the fourth.  After Jamie Keltz and DeMotte drew a pair of walks to start the inning, Russell drove them both in with an RBI triple and later scored on a wild pitch to make the advantage 9-3 in favor of the guests.

Indianapolis added another run in the top half of the sixth to make the final margin 10-3 as Russell picked up her eigth victory of the season.

The Greyhounds picked up where they left off in the nightcap, jumping out to an early 1-0 lead.  Keltz led off the game with a single and later came around to score on an RBI single by Ashley Boxley.

After Rockhurst evened the score at 1-1 in their half of the second, UIndy regained the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third.  Keltz once again singled to lead off the inning and later came around to score on an RBI single by Russell.  Martinez pushed the lead to 3-1 by driving in Russell with an RBI single of her own.

The Hawks scored a run on a pair of hits in the fourth to cut the lead to 3-2, but would get no closer as DeMotte silenced the Rockhurst bats for the rest of the game and gave the Hounds their 11th straight victory.

Indianapolis now stands 14-7 on the season and a perfect 6-0 in conference play.  The Hounds will return to the diamond on Saturday (Mar. 20) and look to extend their winning streak when they host GLVC foe Missouri S&T at 12:00 PM.
