UIndy 2, Maryville 0
UIndy 7, Maryville 1
INDIANAPOLIS- The UIndy softball team made history Friday, sweeping visiting Maryville University 2-0 and 7-1 at Indiana Central Little League for its 13th straight win, a school record for consecutive victories. The Greyhounds also remained perfect in Great Lakes Valley Conference play, upping their league mark to 8-0 with the wins.
GAME ONE
UIndy (16-7, 8-0 GLVC) grabbed a single run in the bottom of the first inning.
Jamie Keltz led-off with a double to the gap in left center and eventually scored on a wild pitch to produce the game's first run. The insurance run came in the fourth innning when
Ashley Boxley, who singled to start the inning, scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Brooke Johnson.
That lead would stand up as the Hounds got a sparkling pitching performance from
Megan Russell. The senior hurler threw a complete-game shutout, surrendering just three singles while striking out a dozen Maryville batters. The dominating performance saw Russell retire the final eight batters in order with final pair striking-out to up her record to 9-3 this season in the circle.
Audry Ernst went 2-for-2 while four other Greyhounds had one hit in the opener.
GAME TWO
Indianapolis struck first in the nightcap, plating a pair in the first frame. After a hit-by-pitch, an error and a single loaded the bases,
Carmen Martinez drove in the first run by drawing a walk. The second run came around when
Chrissy Stephens laced a ball into left field to score Russell for a 2-0 lead.
The Saints (7-14, 0-6) got one back in the top of the next inning as two doubles gave Maryville its first run of the afternoon. UIndy would build on its lead in the fourth inning, scoring three on just one hit. The inning started with a walk and back-to-back errors loaded the bases. Keltz drove in the first run with a deep sacrifice fly to centerfield. Russell drove in the final two runs, ripping a double down the left field line for a 5-1 Greyhound advantage.
That would be more than enough for game two starter
Jennifer DeMotte. The freshman won her sixth straight decision, upping her mark to 6-3 on the season. After squandering the second-inning doubles, DeMotte set down the next 12 batters in order before a single broke the string in the sixth. She retired the final five batters to earn the win and drove-in the final UIndy runs in the sixth with her two-run single for good measure.
DeMotte and Russell each drove in two in the capper and Johnson scored twice for the victorious Hounds.
UIndy will look to extend its streak Saturday, hosting Missouri S&T for a noon doubleheader at ICLL.
Notes: The Greyhounds' previous best winning streak was a 12-game string to start the 1990 season ... UIndy improved to 17-1 all-time at the Indiana Central Little League field in its second season playing its home games there ... Keltz hit safely in both games and now holds the longest current hitting streak, reaching in seven straight contests.
