Softball splits with USI

UIndy 7, Southern Indiana 4
Southern Indiana 2, UIndy 1

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The UIndy softball squad split a pair of games with Great Lakes Valley Conference opponent Southern Indiana on Friday afternoon in Evansville as the Hounds took the opener by a 7-4 margin before falling 2-1 in extra innings in the nightcap.

Game 1
The Greyhounds relied on clutch hitting and used a five-run seventh inning to earn a 7-4 victory in the opener.  UIndy's key hit came from Jennifer DeMotte as she delivered an RBI single with the based loaded to drive in a pair of runs and give Indianapolis a 5-4 lead.  Brooke Johnson and Hannah Atkinson scored on the hit and Kelsey Rummel was awarded home plate after an interference call on the Southern Indiana third baseman.

Megan Russell added an insurance run for the Hounds, following DeMotte's single with one of her own to score DeMotte from second.  Russell also started in the circle for UIndy and pitched a flawless seventh to ensure the 7-4 win.

Indianapolis jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the fourth on RBI singles by Ashley Boxley and Carmen Martinez.  USI answered with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to take a 3-2 lead after four.

The Screaming Eagles tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 4-2 in favor of the home team before the five-run outburst by the Greyhounds in the seventh.

Russell improved her record to 10-4 on the year after tossing all seven innings, striking out seven, and allowing three hits.  Unfortunately for Russell, two of USI's cleared the fence and resulted in four earned runs despite her only issuing one free pass.

Game 2
In the nightcap, it was USI that would use late inning heroics to capture the victory, scoring a run in the bottom of the eighth to prevent the Greyhound sweep.

Indianapolis outhit the hosts 5-3, but managed to plate only a single run via a Russell single in the top half of the third.  Rummel came around to score on the hit after reaching earlier in the inning on a single of her own.

UIndy would maintain their 1-0 advantage into the sixth before the Screaming Eagles knotted the score on a RBI single by Sara Loete that allowed Dani Monks to cross the plate.

The tally remained tied after seven innings and an extra frame was needed.  However, the Greyhounds went down in order in the top half of the frame before USI capitalized on a pair of UIndy errors and scored the game-winning run on a double play ball.

DeMotte dropped to 7-4 on the year after being credited with the loss despite tossing 7.2 innings of three-hit ball.  The freshman recorded 11 strikeouts and allowed only one earned run in defeat.

After the split, the Hounds now stand at 18-9 on the 2010 campaign and 10-2 in league play.  UIndy will wrap up their weekend with a doubleheader against the Tritons of Missouri-St. Louis tomorrow (Mar. 26).  First pitch is scheduled for 1:00.
