UIndy 1, Bellarmine 0
INDIANAPOLIS- The UIndy softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep of Bellarmine, 6-2, 1-0 at Indiana Central Little League on the team's Senior Day Sunday. The double-dip victories push the Greyhounds to 26-11 on the season, 16-4 in GLVC contests.
GAME ONE
UIndy took game one behind a three-hitter in the circle from senior
Megan Russell. Tossing her final game at the ICLL field, Russell (13-6) allowed a pair of runs on a towering home run from Jordan Basham in the seventh inning, but struck out 10 and walked none to earn the win.
The Greyhounds got on the board in the first inning, with
Jennifer DeMotte singling through the right side to start things off. DeMotte moved to second on a Russell single, and scored on an misplay by the Knights' shortstop.
UIndy put up a trio of runs in the second inning, again taking advantage of a Bellarmine miscue.
Brook Johnson led off the inning, reaching on a throwing error by the Knights' thirdbaseman. Two were on after a single through the left side from Audry Ernst a batter later, and the bases were juiced after
Kelsey Rummel was hit by a pitch. A ground ball to the left side from
Jamie Keltz plated Johnson, and the bases were cleared a batter later on a two-run triple from DeMotte.
The Knights led off the fourth with a basehit to the right side, but the offensive effort would be erased by the arm of Greyhound catcher
Ashley Boxley. The UIndy backstop gunned down the Bellarmine runner as she attempted to steal second on a perfect-executed pitch out.
Keltz padded the UIndy lead with a two-run homerun over the left field wall, notching her second and third RBI of the day. Rummel scored on the play, after legging out a bunt single.
DeMotte led at the plate, posting a 3-for-4 effort in game one with a pair of RBI. Keltz had three RBIs and one hit.
GAME TWO
The offense cooled off a bit in game two, with just one run deciding the Greyhound victory.
UIndy scored its lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning, with a one-out triple to the center field wall from senior
Carmen Martinez providing the spark. Johnson brought Martinez home with a single through the left side a batter later to put the Greyhounds on top, 1-0.
DeMotte (12-4) picked up the win, striking out 10 batters while walking just one. Russell recorded a pair of hits in the ballgame, half of the Greyhounds' four-hit output.
UIndy continues on in GLVC play, traveling to Northern Kentucky Saturday for a doubleheader matchup. The Greyhounds will then take a step outside of the conference to take on GLIAC-foe Hillsdale Apr. 20.
