Wild walk-offs in Saturday GLVC action

Box scores
UIndy 5, Missouri S&T 3
Wisconsin-Parkside 6, UIndy 5

EAST PEORIA, Ill.-  The Greyhound softball team got a walk-off homer to advance in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships Saturday, but had the tables turned on them in the next round, losing via walk-off to bow out of the double-elimination tourney Saturday at EastSide Centre.  Senior Megan Russell completed a wild comeback with a two-run homer for a 5-3 win over Missouri S&T in the day's first game, but a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Wisconsin-Parkside a 6-5 victory in the second loser's bracket game of the day.

UIndy will be headed back home after splitting a pair of games in the opening day of the tournament Friday.  But, it looked like it would be much earlier as the Greyhounds were down to their final strike in the win over the Miners.  Trailing 3-1, UIndy's Kelsey Rummel slapped a two-strike hit down the third-base line to keep slim hopes alive.  Jamie Keltz then hit a ball to the shortstop that could have ended the game, but Rummel beat the underhand toss at second.

Jennifer DeMotte cashed both those runners in a batter later when she roped a ball into the left-centerfield gap for a two-run double and a tie score.  The very next pitch, Russell hammered her eighth homer of the season over the right-center wall and UIndy was victorious 5-3.

The crazy comeback made Russell a winner in the circle as she struck-out 10 and allowed three earned runs in upping her record to 21-7.  Ashley Wallingford had 16 strikeouts for S&T, but suffered the loss with the four-spot in the final inning.

UIndy took an early lead in the second game of the day with Russell's second homer.  She rocked a 3-2 pitch halfway up the hill behind the leftfield wall at EastSide Centre for a quick 1-0 Greyhound advantage.  UWP (30-20) got it back in the bottom of the frame and later took the lead, 2-1 through three innings.

The Hounds got a two-run homer from Carmen Martinez in the fourth and a two-run single from Ashley Boxley in the next frame to take a 5-3 advantage.  That looked to hold up but a dropped fly ball with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning plated a pair of Ranger runners and retied the score at 5-5.

The first batter of the bottom of the seventh walloped a walk-off homer and gave UWP the win.  Russell suffered the loss, despite allowing just two earned runs and seven hits in six-plus innings.  Parkside advanced in the loser's bracket and will need another win Saturday to move on to Championship Series on Sunday.

The Hounds rapped-out eight hits in the loss with two coming from Martinez.  Seven different Greyhounds had a hit in game two.

UIndy (36-15) will await word on its seeding for the NCAA Division II tournament, set to begin next weekend.  The Greyhounds, currently ranked third in the Midwest Region, will find out its opponent and location when the tourney pairings are announced during an NCAA Selection Show Monday morning at 10:00 a.m. on ncaa.com.
