UIndy 38, Kentucky Wesleyan 10
OWENSBORO, Ky.- Behind a 21-point third quarter, the University of Indianapolis handed host Kentucky Wesleyan a 38-10 defeat in the season opener for both teams. UIndy sophomore running back
Joumeel McLaurine scored three rushing touchdowns and tallied 108 yards on the ground to help the Greyhounds to their sixth straight season-opening win.
The second half was an impressive one that saw many standout performances. After the score was just 7-3 at the half, UIndy put the pieces together offensively in the third quarter and raced away to victory. McLaurine had his second and third rushing TDs book-ending a 30-yard scoring run from
Klay Fiechter. Late in the quarter,
Ryan Forney ran back a kickoff 70 yards inside the KWC 10-yardline as all of the units worked out the early season kinks.
The defense was again solid, squandering just 31 rushing yards and forcing four fumbles (one recovery).
Max Davis led the way with eight total stops, two tackles for loss and a sack.
Alex Byrnes chipped-in three pass break-ups.
Junior quarterback
Rob Doyle finished the night going 16-for-26 for 172 yards. McLaurine had 108 rushing yards on 21 carries while Fiechter added 59 yards on a half-dozen rushes. Mar'Quone Edmonds caught five balls for 61 yards to lead the aerial attack.
The Greyhounds will open the home portion of their schedule next Saturday, welcoming Ashland for a 6:00 p.m. kick. In remembrance of September 11 and in honor and appreciation of our military, UIndy and Army ROTC proudly welcome all active and retired military personnel to be our guests for that game. Notes: Tyran Fakes uncorked a pair of punts for 50 yards or more, including a school-record 79-yarder in the fourth quarter ... the previous UIndy record was a 76-yard punt by Dennis Nisbet back in the 1998 season ... Fakes had three of his five punts go inside the opponents' 5-yardline with two of those downed at the 1-yardline ... Forney had 176 all-purpose yards with 92 coming on two kick returns, 44 on a punt return touchdown and three catches totaling 40 yards ... Forney broke loose for a 70-yard kick return that set-up an early fourth-quarter field goal ... McLaurine has scored five (four rushing, one receiving) of his career six touchdowns in his career against KWC (two games) ... Coach
Bob Bartolomeo is now 2-1 in season openers as a collegiate coach.
