On tap: UIndy opens its home schedule with Ashland University paying a visit for a 6 p.m. kick this Saturday. The Eagles, fresh off a 24-14 win over Bloomsburg last week, are making their first road trip of the season. The Greyhounds were 38-10 winners over Kentucky Wesleyan last Thursday, thanks in part to a 21-point third quarter.
Series history: The Eagles have won 19 of the 29 meetings between the schools, including wins in each of the past three contests. The last Greyhound win in the series came on Nov. 6, 2004, a 24-21 victory at Key Stadium. UIndy is 6-9 all-time against Ashland at Key Stadium.
About Ashland: The Eagles were picked to finish fourth in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Preseason Coaches Poll. Coming off a 6-5 campaign a season ago, Ashland looks to be back to form with an impressive 10-point win over a good Bloomsburg squad. The Eagles were an NCAA-playoff team in both 2007 and 2008, but were 4-5 in their first nine game last year to fall out of the mix. New quarterback sophomore Taylor Housewright went 16-for-26 for 248 yards and two throwing TDs and added 65 yards rushing to lead the way for Ashland last week.
About AU Head Coach Lee Owens: Coach Owens is in his seventh season at the helm of the Eagles' program. He's amassed a 42-25 record in his time at Ashland. Owens is 3-1 against the Greyhounds with his teams averaging 26 points per contest against UIndy.
About UIndy Head Coach Bob Bartolomeo (15-7-1 overall, 1-0 at UIndy): Coach “Bart” takes over the reigns of the UIndy football program after six seasons as the Greyhound defensive coordinator. Bartolomeo has over three-and-a-half decades of coaching experience at NCAA Division I-A, I-AA and II, but will be in his third season as a head man. He led the Butler Bulldogs to the NCAA Division II playoffs in 1991, winning the Midwest Intercollegiate Football Conference (MIFC-- now the GLIAC) and posted a 14-7-1 record over two seasons. He then logged 11 seasons at Ball State and a brief stop at Central Michigan in 2003 before taking over the Greyhound defense in 2004.
No Fakes-ing: Tyran Fakes had a school-record day in the season-opening win at Kentucky Wesleyan. The fifth-year senior uncorked a pair of punts for 50 yards or more, including a school-record 79-yarder in the fourth quarter. The previous UIndy record was a 76-yard punt by Dennis Nisbet back in the 1998 season. Fakes had three of his five punts go inside the opponents' 5-yardline with two of those downed at the 1-yardline.
Picking Up Where He Left Off: Junior return specialist
Ryan Forney is well on his to duplicating a superb season in the return game. A year after ranking among the nation's best in both kick and punt returns, Forney racked-up 136 total yards on returns, including a 70-yard kick return. He also added a 44-yard punt return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter, his second career punt return TD.
10th in Preseason Poll: Consider it motivation that the University of Indianapolis finds itself 10th in the annual GLIAC Preseason Coaches poll. After a 4-7 season a year ago, the Greyhounds have some work to do to get back to the upper echelon of the league, but will rely on a top-ranked defense and young talent on offense to work on proving the poll inaccurate.
New League Announced for 2012: The University of Indianapolis will be one of the charter members of the newly-formed Great Lakes Valley Conference announced in January by league and school officials. The addition of football to the league's sponsored sports beginning in 2012 will allow UIndy to compete as a full member, joining 17 other Greyhound varsity teams that battle for GLVC championships. UIndy, which currently competes in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) as an associate member, will play its 2010 and 2011 schedules in that league. Indianapolis has been a member of the GLIAC since it merged with the Midwest Intercollegiate Football Conference back in 1999.
