Greyhound men take third consecutive GLVC Indoor Track & Field title

2012 GLVC Indoor Track and Field Championships


SOMERS, Wis.- The Greyhound men's track and field squad took its third-straight Great Lakes Valley Conference Indoor title Saturday, with UIndy's Jermel Kindred and Matt Royer earning the GLVC Track and Field Athletes of the Year in addition to the team win.

UIndy totaled 189 team points, a whoppping 95 points ahead of second-place squad Missouri S&T with 94 points. The Greyhound's head coach, Scott Fangman, also earned the GLVC Coach of the Year honor on the men's side.

The Greyhounds had five individual champions at the meet, and also took the 4x400 meter relay title en route to the championship.

Jerel Flournoy took the 200-meter dash title with a new meet-record time of 21.79. Robert Gardner followed with another Greyhound win in the 400-meter dash, also establishing a new GLVC indoor meet record with a time of 47.96.

The men's 4x400 relay squad of Flournoy, Gardner, Kindred and Kyle Schwartz won its race with a time of 3:24.32.

In the field events, Joshua Bass took the league long jump championship with a leap of 7.47 meters, also good for an NCAA provisional mark.

Ryan Smith earned the 2012 GLVC men's shot put title, with an NCAA provisional mark toss of 17.17 meters, which was just .02 meters off the GLVC Indoor meet record. Royer took the title in the men's weight throw, establishing a new meet record with a toss of 20.45 meters, also another NCAA automatic qualifying mark.

The Greyhound women's team finished third in the 11-team field, amassing 124.5 team points. Bellarmine won the women's title with 177.5 total points.

UIndy had a pair of individual champions on the women's side. LaTisha Martin took the GLVC title in the women's 400-meter dash, with a time of 57.71.

On the field, Katy Watson topped the field for a league championship in the shot put, with a throw of 12.50 meters.

At the league meet, all individual champions are named First Team All-GLVC.

In addition to the GLVC championship winners, the Greyhounds also put up some more NCAA marks at the meet.

Valorie Wagner hit an NCAA provisional mark in the women's long jump, with her leap of 5.60 meters good for second in the event.

Gardner and Kindred both put up NCAA provisional times in the 200-meter dash, in addition to Flournoy's win in the event. Gardner crossed the finish line in 21.80, with Kindered coming in 22.14.

The trio all also provisionaled in the 400-meter event, with Kindred taking second with a time of 48.50 and Flournoy taking third with a time of 48.75.

Kindred also put up a provisional time in taking second in the 55-meter hurdles. The GLVC Track Athlete of the Year finished with a time of 7.68 in the event.

Flournoy also provoisionaled in the long jump, taking second to Bass with his mark of 7.28 meters. Royer also put up a provisional mark in the shot put, taking third in the field with a throw of 16.82 meters.

In addition to Royer's win and automatic qualifying mark in the weight throw, Smith took second in the event with an NCAA provisional mark of 19.50 meters. Marcus Montgomery closed out a trio of Greyhounds in the top three with an NCAA provisional mark of 17.94 meters.

The qualifying Greyhounds will compete at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at Minnesota-Mankato Mar. 9-10.
