Greyhounds post five NCAA provisional marks at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.- The Greyhound track and field squads opened the outdoor season at Purdue's Mike Poehlein Invitational during the weekend, posting five provisional marks.

Both Ryan Smith and Matt Royer picked up right where they left off as All-Americans in the indoor season, with both posting NCAA provisional marks in both the hammer and shot put.

Royer won the men's hammer throw with a toss of 65.62 meters, while Smith took third in the event with a throw of 59.38 meters. The pair switched places in the men's shot put, with Smith winning the event with a throw of 17.39 meters, while Royer took third with a mark of 16.91 meters.

On the track, Jermel Kindred posted a provisional time in his first meet of the outdoor season in the 400-meter dash. Kindred won the event with a time of 47.47, good for an NCAA provisional mark.

Kindred joined Jerel Flournoy, Kyle Schwartz and Robert Gardner to also post a provisional mark in the men's 4x400-meter relay. The squad won the event with a time of 3:12.96.

In addition to the NCAA marks, Flournoy took second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.85, while LaTisha Martin also took second in the women's 200-meter dash with a time of 25.19.

The women's 4x100-meter relay team of Valerie Wagnor, Krystyn Tender, Shanese McGregor and Sarah Martin won their event with a time of 50.57.  

Kevin Keene took second in the men's javelin with a throw of 50.09 meters, while Zach Little tied for second in the men's high jump with a leap of 2.01 meters.

The Greyhounds will take the short trip downtown to IUPUI April 13-14 for the Indiana Intercollegiates.
