GREYHOUNDS IN TOURNAMENT PLAY: UIndy is now 6-25-2 all-time in GLVC Championship Tournament matches, including Sunday's 1-0 victory over Bellarmine at Key Stadium. This season marks the Greyhounds' sixth trip to the GLVC semifinals, with UIndy appearing in the GLVC Championship match once (2010). The Greyhounds have never won a GLVC Championship Tournament title, in 33 years of playing soccer in the GLVC.
UINDY AGAINST DRURY: All-time, the Greyhounds are 4-6 versus Drury, which joind the GLVC in 2005. In postseason play, UIndy is 0-1 versus the Panthers, who defeated the Greyhounds 2-1 in the first round of the 2008 GLVC Tournament.
This season, however, UIndy picked up a
3-1 victory over Drury, hosting the Panthers at Key Stadium Oct. 20.
Ngwese Ebangwese,
Brendon Widau and
Reid Strain all scored in the victory, then the Greyhounds' sixth in a row.
THE PANTHERS: Drury is coming off of an upset
1-0 overtime victory over tournament three-seed Lewis last Sunday. A Ryan Haas header assisted by Matt Clarkin at the 95:14 mark in overtime led Drury to the win.
The Panthers, the six-seed in the tournament, were the only low seed to advance in this season's bracket. Drury (13-6-0) has reached the semifinals of the GLVC tournament for the third time in the program's history, having won the league title in 2009 and finished second in 2011.
TOURNAMENT OVERVIEW: The winner of Friday afternoon's first semifinal match advances to play the winner of No. 1 Quincy and No. 3 Rockhurst Sunday at 2:30 p.m, CST. REGIONAL IMPLICATIONS: The matches on tap for this weekend's GLVC Tournament have implications on the NCAA Regional Rankings, with Rockhurst, Lewis, Quincy and UIndy all in the mix to represent the GLVC in NCAA play next weekend. The top five teams in the Midwest Region will square off at the #1 and #2 seed sites Nov. 15-17. Currently, the Greyhounds come in as the top GLVC team in the region at #3, while Lewis, Quincy and Rockhurst come in at #4, #5 and #6, respectively. Lewis is already out of the tournament, while Quincy and Rockhurst will play each other, as well as the winner of UIndy/Drury on the weekend.Â
2013 MILESTONES: 2013 has been a banner year for UIndy men's soccer, with the team posting its program-best marks in total wins (14), GLVC wins (12) and win streakk (10). Prior to this season, the 2006 team held the mark for most wins with 13, while the 2011 Greyhounds were the record holders for both most GLVC wins with 11, and longest win streak (9 matches).
CALL ME WAHSAY: Ngwese Ebangwese has lit up the scoresheet for the Greyhounds in 2013, scoring 13 goals so far on the season. The junior transfer from Rochester, NY, strung together three matches where he tallied two goals in each match during the regular season, and leads the GLVC in goals, goals per match, points and points per match. His goal total is the most by a Greyhound since Brian Fishback's 13 scores in 2007.
GLVC DEFENSIVE POW: Daniel Wellmann and
Andrew Verhonik each earned their first career GLVC Player of the Week honors during the season, with Wellmann taking the final accolade of 2013 Nov. 4, while Verhonik earned his award Oct. 21.
SQUEAKY CLEANSHEET: The Greyhound defense has recorded seven shutouts on the year, including five during its current 10-match win streak. Junior GK
Andrew Verhonik has tallied six of the UIndy cleansheet victories on the year, bringing him to 13 for his Greyhound career.
POTENT OFFENSE: Powered by 12 different Greyhounds scoring goals and 13 notching assists on the year, UIndy has outscored its opponents 40-16 in 2013. The 40 scores by the Greyhounds is the most since 2007's team found the back of the net 44 times, including five goals from current Head Coach John Higgins.
