INDIANAPOLIS – The postseason continues for both University of Indianapolis basketball teams this week in Evansville, Ind., in the 2013 Deaconess GLVC Basketball Championship Tournament. The men start things off on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. ET against West Division champion and top-seeded Drury, which is ranked eighth in Division II. Action continues when the women take the floor at the Ford Center for their quarterfinal contest against the three-seed, Kentucky Wesleyan, on Friday at 1 p.m.
The men advanced to the quarters with their Sunday home win over Missouri-St. Louis,
74-63, at Nicoson Hall. UIndy will be playing Drury for the first time in the postseason, but the second time this season. The Greyhounds defeated the Panthers,
72-69, at Nicoson Hall on Jan. 10 to snap a four-game losing streak in the series. The men are led by the all-conference tandem of
Reece Cheatham and
James Hollowell. They were named to the All-GLVC Second Team on Tuesday.
The women handled in-state rival Southern Indiana,
79-61, at Nicoson Hall on Sunday afternoon to advance to the quarterfinals. Over its last eight tournament games, the Greyhounds are 6-2, including a trip to the league finals in 2011 and a semifinal appearance last season. UIndy will have a chance for redemption this year as it was Kentucky Wesleyan that knocked UIndy out of the 2012 GLVC Tournament.
This season, both teams won on their home floor with the Panthers taking a
67-61 decision in Owensboro, while the Hounds countered with a
75-64 win in Indianapolis in the most recent meeting on Feb. 16. UIndy features the All-GLVC First Team duo of senior
Kristin Turner and junior
Katy McIntosh.
The team has advanced to the league finals five times, with its only conference tournament title coming in 2003.
Both games are also important in terms of the NCAA Tournament for UIndy as they will both be playing teams ranked ahead of them in the NCAA Midwest Region rankings.
GLVC postseason basketball is returning to Evansville, Ind., for the first time in six years. The new
Ford Center will be the site of the quarterfinal, semifinal and final rounds, held March 7-10. The event marks the first time the conference tournament will be held in Evansville since the recently-demolished Roberts Stadium played host from 1999-2007.
