Softball concludes Chillout with third straight split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The No. 7 UIndy softball team will return home Sunday with an even 3-3 record after earning its third split in as many days at the annual UAH Charger Chillout.  The Greyhounds endured an 8-4 defeat versus Saint Edward's in the morning before wrapping up the invitational with a 7-2 win against West Alabama.

vs. SAINT EDWARD'S
The Hounds got on the board early with a run in the top of the first inning when Taylor Russell led off the game with a double and later scored on a sac fly from Alexa Alfaro.

The lead held until the Hilltoppers (6-4) broke through with three runs in the bottom of the third.  They tacked on two more in the fourth and three in the fifth to take command.

After being roughed up in the third, starting pitcher Morgan Lewis (2-1) allowed two batters to reach in the fourth before being pulled.  She was charged with five runs – all earned – to absorb her first loss of the season.

The Hounds mustered one last rally in the seventh, sparked by a leadoff double from Sydney Russell.  Two walks followed before Russell scored on a wild pitch.  Alfaro delivered a two-out, two-run single to keep the Hounds alive, but pitcher Sarah Debrow (2-3) ended the threat with her fifth strikeout of the game to seal the win for the Hilltoppers.

Note: SEU received votes in the NFCA Division II Top 25 Preseason Poll.

vs. WEST ALABAMA
UIndy once again notched a first-inning run and Taylor Russell was again the catalyst.  The junior slugger recorded her first home run of the season with a solo shot to start the game.

With the score still 1-0 in the third, the Hounds patiently drew four straight walks to start the inning, with Jenny Thompson's base on balls good for an RBI.  A sacrifice fly from junior Samantha Krcelich and an RBI single from freshman Rebecca Wishnevski plated two more runs in the frame.

After Alfaro knocked in another tally in the fourth, T. Russell bookended the game with a two-run dinger to center, scoring herself and Krysta Bradford.

Sophomore pitcher Morgan Foley got the win, allowing two runs (one earned) in an eight-strikeout, complete-game performance.

Alfaro finished the Chillout with a team-high six RBI, while Casey Williamson racked up 14 total bases, five walks and five stolen bases.

UIndy returns to Alabama next week to compete in the North Alabama Invitational.  The action starts on Valentine's Day with a four o'clock meeting with Trevecca Nazarene.
