EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The UIndy softball team (12-6, 5-1 GLVC) earned two conference road wins Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader at division-rival Southern Indiana, 1-0 and 3-2. The Greyhounds have won six games in row versus USI and seven of their last eight overall.
Â
GAME 1
Sophomore
Morgan Foley (7-4) tossed a three-hit shutout in the opener, striking out 14 batters and walking only one. The final score marked her fourth win of the season in a one-run contest, three of which have come in 1-0 games.
Â
The Screaming Eagles (10-7, 2-6) nearly plated an early run with a double and a single in the first, but centerfielder
Erika Goodwin gunned down a USI runner at the plate to keep the home team off the board.
Â
UIndy's lone run came in the fifth. Freshman Taylor Weck started the inning with a walk, moved the second on a
Cori Eckerle sacrifice and scored on a
Katie Kelly single.
GAME 2
Trailing 1-0 through three innings, the Hounds powered their way to three runs in the top of the fourth. Junior
Taylor Russell and sophomore
Jenny Thompson blasted back-to-back homers to fuel the rally. Russell's hit drove in Goodwin, who reached on a bunt single, while Thompson's was a solo shot.
Â
Foley (8-4) got the win in a game two as well, allowing just one unearned run in the final 5 1/3 innings while striking out nine. She came on in relief of starter
Morgan Lewis, who gave up one unearned run and three hits – including two doubles – before being pulled in the second.
Â
UIndy heads east on I-64 to Louisville, Ky., to face division-leading Bellarmine tomorrow. The Knights are a perfect 10-0 in GLVC play. First pitch of the twin bill is scheduled for noon ET.
