Box Score 2 INDIANAPOLIS – After a failed attempt due to poor conditions three weeks ago and a three-hour weather delay to today's start, the UIndy softball team finally played its 2014 home opener Saturday, handing rival Lewis a pair of division losses, 12-0 and 6-0. The Greyhounds (15-7, 8-2 GLVC) held to Flyers scoreless all afternoon before darkness abbreviated game two after 5 ½ chilly innings.
GAME 1The Hounds jumped all over the visiting Flyers (9-14, 3-7) in the first, hanging a 10-spot on the board in the bottom half of the inning. UIndy sent 13 batters to the plate with six reaching via a walk or a hit by pitch.
Freshman
Katie Kelly had a two-run double in the frame, but it was junior
Taylor Russell that provided the exclamation point, driving in four runs with a home run to deep center field. The blast was good for her team-leading seventh homer of the year and first career grand slam.
UIndy picked up two more on a two-run, pinch-hit single by
Casey Williamson in the bottom of the fourth. The Flyers, meanwhile, did little offensively to keep the run rule from being enacted after four-and-a-half innings.
In the circle, UIndy's two Morgans combined for the shutout.
Morgan Foley tossed three scoreless innings before
Morgan Lewis (5-3) picked up where Foley left off, throwing the final two without incident to earn the win.
GAME 2Neither team managed to get on the board through the first three innings, but UIndy plated three runs each in the fourth and fifth frames.
Tayler Weck and
Casey Williamson each drew a walk and scored in both innings.
Erika Goodwin was 4 for 4 in game two, including a two-run single in the fourth. The sophomore outfielder was not retired in seven plate appearances in both games combined.
Foley got the win in the capper by notching her fifth complete-game shutout of the season. She struck out four and allowed five hits – all singles – in six innings of work.
The Hounds look forward to warmer temperatures tomorrow when they host UW-Parkside in a doubleheader starting at noon.
