Softball completes perfect weekend with sweep of Parkside

Sophomore Erika Goodwin
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

INDIANAPOLIS – After sweeping Lewis yesterday, the UIndy softball team (17-7, 10-2 GLVC) did the same to Wisconsin-Parkside Sunday, notching wins of 12-0 and 8-0 in a pair of five-inning finals.  The Greyhounds, who have won their last four games and 12 of their last 14, did not allow a run all weekend while adding four home runs at the plate, including two grand slams.

The Hounds had a number of people step up offensively, but none quite like sophomore Erika Goodwin, who did not record an out all weekend.  The Indy native, who also stole three bases Sunday, has gotten a hit in her last 11 at bats.  Toss in three walks and she has reached base safely in 14 consecutive plate appearances.

GAME 1
After two scoreless innings from both teams, the Hounds broke things open with four runs in the third and eight in the fourth.  Extra-base hits from senior Cori Eckerle bookended the action; the veteran catcher led off the third with a double and scored on an error shortly thereafter.  She then capped the explosion fourth frame with her first career grand slam.

In between, senior Alexa Alfaro had her first of two extra-base knocks on the day, as she drove an 0-1 pitch the centerfield wall for a two-run double.

Morgan Foley (12-4) was once again brilliant in the circle, as the Louisville, Ky., product allowed one walk and one single as the only Ranger base runners.  She recorded her 12th win of the season after going four shutout innings while fanning seven.

Senior Morgan Lewis threw the fifth and final frame, striking out the side on 14 pitches.

GAME 2
The Rangers (1-13, 1-9) looked the take an early lead in game two, but the Hounds squelched the  potential rally before it started.  Parkside had runners on second and third with nobody out, but shortstop Tayler Weck cut down a runner at the plate, Eckerle picked off another runner at third and Parkside clean-up hitter Alexis Simone flied out to center to end the threat without incident.

Lewis (5-3), who got the start in game two, settled in from that point, striking out seven of the final 15 batters she faced.  She garnered the win after tossing four scoreless innings and allowing just three hits.

Meanwhile, sophomore pitcher Coryn Tirpak came on to work a clean fifth inning in her first conference appearance of the season.

The home run was again a big part of the Greyhound offense; sophomore Jenny Thompson laced a three-run bomb just inside the leftfield foul pole to start the scoring in the first inning, while junior Casey Williamson went to right with her solo shot in the third.

Thompson also had a two-run double in the second inning, while Alfaro guided a bases-empty triple past the right fielder in the first.

Eckerle compiled two more hits in game two to finish the day 4-for-5 with three runs scored and five driven in.

The Greyhounds will play their next six series on the road, starting with a doubleheader at in-state Saint Joseph's Tuesday, Apr. 2.
