Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS – The UIndy softball team upped its winning streak to 14 after notching a doubleheader sweep at Maryville Saturday afternoon. Both wins ended in a final score of 5-4, as the Greyhounds (27-7, 18-2 GLVC) maintained their lead in the GLVC East standings.
GAME 1With the score knotted at 3-3 in the top of the sixth, sophomore
Erika Goodwin delivered the game-winning RBI. Her sacrifice fly not only plated freshman
Tayler Weck with the go-ahead tally, but also gave fellow-freshman
Katie Kelly a chance to score after the Maryville catcher committed an error on the play.
Pitcher
Morgan Foley (19-4) struck out 11 in the complete-game win. She was tagged for three unearned runs before surrendering her one and only earned tally on a solo homer in the sixth. The Saints' first score broke Foley's string of recording 104 consecutive outs without allowing a run.
Junior
Casey Williamson finished 2-for-4 with two runs. The Indy native crushed her fifth homerun of the year with a solo shot in the third. She also swiped the 90th base of her career in the first, extending her school-record total.
GAME 2Pitcher
Coryn Tirpak earned her first collegiate start in game two, but the sophomore recorded just two outs before the Saints (12-20, 8-12) strung together three straight hits, including a two-run home run, to force an early exit for Tirpak.
The Hounds went to senior pitcher
Morgan Lewis (8-3), who lasted 3 2/3 after allowing a two runs while ultimately getting the win.
In the meantime,
Taylor Russell turned the game around with a single swing, turning a 3-1 deficit in the fifth inning into a 5-3 lead. With the bases full of Hounds, Russell hit a towering shot to left field, good for her 11th dinger of the season and second grand slam – both team highs.
After Maryville pulled within one in the bottom of the fifth, UIndy went to Foley to close it out. The Louisville, Ky., product delivered, coaxing an inning-ending double play to strand the potential tying run on second. She went on to retire the next six batters in order to record for first save of the season.
Like her twin sister Taylor,
Sydney Russell recorded two hits in the game while also adding a walk and two steals.
The Greyhounds travel across town Sunday for a showdown with No. 6 Missouri-St. Louis. The league's two best hurlers will face off in game one, as Foley will take on her West Division counterpart Hannah Perryman. Links to live stats and a video stream can be found on the UIndy softball
