Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS – Sophomore pitcher
Morgan Foley tossed a three-hit shutout versus sixth-ranked Missouri-St. Louis Sunday, highlighting a doubleheader sweep for the UIndy softball team (29-7, 20-2 GLVC). The two GLVC powers came into the game leading their respective division, but the Greyhounds handed UMSL a pair of 2-0 losses – just its second and third conference defeats of the season.
The Tritons (30-5, 17-3) also entered play ranking second in the conference in both runs scored and slugging percentage but managed zero runs and zero extra base hits on the day.
GAME 1The opening game featured arguably the league's two best pitchers, as 2013 All-Americans
Morgan Foley and Hannah Perryman went to-to-toe. Both hurlers went the distance, but it was Foley (20-4) that got the win, spinning a three-hit shutout versus the West-Division-leading Tritons. All three hits allowed were singles, and no UMSL base runner reached second. She also fanned 11 batters while walking only two.
Meanwhile, Perryman (16-4) kept the Greyhounds off the board in six of the seven frames but the sixth inning proved lethal. A free pass and a pair of wild pitches put leadoff hitter
Erika Goodwin on third base with one out. The Hounds made it hurt with doubles from sluggers
Casey Williamson and
Taylor Russell, scoring two runs in the game-deciding frame.
Goodwin finished with a bunt single and two walks. Senior
Cori Eckerle also walked twice as the only other Greyhound to reach base more than once.
GAME 2The Hounds once again came out on top of a 2-0 final score. The visitors plated single runs in the fourth and sixth innings to hand UMSL's No. 2 pitcher, Brittni Chapman (13-1), her first loss of the year.
Two Triton fielding errors in the fourth bookended a wild pitch, plating Williamson with the first run.
Sydney Russell's sixth-inning double and an RBI knock by
Jenny Thompson provided insurance.
Game-two starter
Morgan Lewis battled through 3 2/3 innings without allowing a run. Foley (21-4) came on in the fourth to escape a bases-loaded jam. She pitched the final three frames without incident to earn another W.
The Greyhounds have six games on tap this coming week. They put their 16-game winning streak on the line Wednesday in a non-conference twin bill at Kentucky Wesleyan Wednesday starting at 4 p.m. ET.
