Hounds sweep Hawks in Saturday double

Freshman Tayler Weck
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 24 UIndy softball team (34-8, 23-3 GLVC) took care of business at home Saturday afternoon, handing visiting Quincy losses of 5-1 and 10-1 in a doubleheader at Baumgartner Field.  Freshman shortstop Tayler Weck did not make an out in six plate appearances on the day, while sophomore pitcher Coryn Tirpak collected her first career win in the capper.

GAME 1
After a scoreless first inning, the Hounds took the lead for good with three runs in the second inning, capped by a two-run single by freshman Katie Kelly.  That inning alone was enough to back starter Morgan Foley, but UIndy tacked on single runs in the third and sixth frames.  Taylor Russell and Weck each had a double in the third for run No. 4, while a single, a stolen base, a single and an error brought Weck around for the game's final tally.

Foley won her 19th straight decision in the circle with a complete game performance.  She struck out six and surrendered just four hits to up her record to 25-4 on the season.

GAME 2
In game two, the Hounds went to sophomore pitcher Coryn Tirpak (1-0) for the start – just her second of the season.  The Monticello, Ind., native more than delivered, going the distance in a two-hit complete game.  She struck out two and walked only one to net her first collegiate win in the circle.

Meanwhile, the UIndy offense once again provided more than enough support.  RBI doubles from the Russell twins helped stake the Hounds to an early lead before a five-run fourth all but sealed it.

The Greyhounds sent 10 batters to the plate in the fatal inning but only needed one hit in the rally.  Two different Hawks' pitchers combined to walk four consecutive hitters, three of which came with the bases loaded.

Sophomore Jenny Thompson had three singles in the game, including a two-run knock in the fourth.  Kelly scored three runs while Weck coaxed three walks.

The Greyhounds welcome in-state rival Saint Joseph's to town Tuesday.  The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. ET.
