Box Score 2 SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – On the way to earning the win in game one, UIndy starting pitcher
Morgan Foley recorded her 500th career strikeout in game one's 2-0 win at Illinois Springfield. The Greyhounds (23-7, 14-2 GLVC) made it a clean sweep with a 5-3 extra-inning victory in the capper, with
Jenny Thompson scoring the winning run on a wild pitch.
The two wins upped UIndy's winning streak to 10. Foley ultimately earned the pitching win in both contests, upping her record to 17-4 on the season.
GAME 1Foley, who is just a sophomore, reached the 500-strikeout milestone in the second inning. She finished the game with 15 Ks, including six in the final two frames, on the way to the completing the two-hit shutout.
Both of UIndy's runs came in the top of the second. The Greyhounds started the frame with back-to-back singles from
Taylor Russell and
Alexa Alfaro, with both coming around to score on
Cori Eckerle's RBI knock.
Russell and Eckerle each garnered two hits in game one.
GAME 2UIndy scored the first run of the game in the third inning and tacked on two more in the fourth. Junior
Casey Williamson's single in the fourth drove in the first run, while freshman
Katie Kelly plated a pair with an infield single in the fifth.
After going hitless through four, the Prairie Stars (15-18, 6-12) answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. The home team got on the board with a solo homer from Shannon Ballegeer, then put runners on first and third with a walk and a single to chase starter
Morgan Lewis.
Foley returned to the circle to strike out the next two batters, but not before both UIS base runners touched home when a Greyhound error on a stolen base attempt led to a pair of unearned runs.
Foley held the Stars scoreless the rest of the way, striking out nine of the first 10 batters she faced and 12 total in her 4 1/3 innings of work.
Meanwhile, the UIndy offense put multiple runners on base in the fifth and seventh innings before finally breaking through in the ninth.
Taylor Russell provided the pop in the deciding frame, moving Thompson from first to third with a double to right field.
After Alfaro walked, Thompson scored the game winner on a wild pitch by UIS starter Alex Smith. Smith was then pulled in favor of Cheyanne Bowman, but to add insult to injury, Bowman also threw one to the back stop to score Alfaro with an insurance run.
The Stars managed a lead-off single in their half of the ninth, but Foley slammed the door by striking out the next three hitters to seal the win.
The Greyhounds head south to the St. Louis area to face the McKendree Bearcats Sunday. The twin bill is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. ET.
