ABOUT SOUTHWEST BAPTISTThe Bearcats are coming off a dominating 52-0 shutout of NAIA 21st-ranked Friends University (Kan.). QB Trent Edwards racked up 156 rushing yards and three touchdowns for SBU while throwing for another 121 yards and a score. The athletic freshman ranks second in the GLVC in rushing yards (104.0 ypg) and third in total offense (284.0 ypg).
Meanwhile, the Bearcat defense garnered four interceptions on the day, including three from senior safety Antion McBee.
In addition, freshman Jaylen Jones collected GLVC Special Teams Player of the Week honors for his efforts. His big day included a 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and a 42-yard punt return that set up another score.
Southwest Baptist's season opener came in Allendale, Mich., versus then 24th-ranked Grand Valley State. Down 36-7 early in the third, the Bearcats mounted a furious comeback with 21 answered points. SBU would ultimately find itself with the ball in a one-possession game, but after earning a pair of first downs to advance to midfield, the Lakers' Joe Moran intercepted Edwards with less than two minutes to play to all but seal it.
Last year, the Bearcats finished 2-9 with their lone GLVC win coming in a 42-21 rout of fellow GLVC associate-member Lincoln.
HOUNDS vs. BEARCATSWith the Bearcats joining the GLVC as an associate member just last year, Saturday's opponents have but a single game of history between them. Last September, UIndy handed SBU a
48-14 defeat in Bolivar last September as a trio of Greyhound skill players recorded 100-yard games
Andrew Walker (117) and
Matt Ripp (102) each rushed for more than 100 yards, while wideout
Reece Horn (120) surpassed the century mark in receiving yards. Defensively, the Hounds amassed three sacks, an interception and a forced fumble, while linebacker
Rob Dury led all players with 13 total tackles.
BACK-TO-BACK-TO-BACKUIndy's conference title defense officially begins today. Winners of each of the first three GLVC football crowns, the Greyhounds were once again tabbed as the league favorite in the annual
preseason coaches poll.
The Hounds enter Saturday's match-up with a stellar 22-1 (.957) record versus GLVC opponents since the conference began sponsoring the sport in 2012.
With a GLVC mark of 7-1 last year, the Greyhounds won the league by two full games, topping a quartet of contenders at 5-3. It marked the first time UIndy won three straight conference championships since the school – then named Indiana Central College – took the Hoosier College Conference crown in 1953, '54 and '55.
MONUMENTAL MATCHUPLast weekend brought the much-anticipated inaugural gridiron meeting between crosstown UIndy and Marian University. Dubbed the "Monumental Matchup," the host Knights, ranked No. 1 in the NAIA poll, held off the Hounds for a
28-22 win.
UIndy managed just six points in the first two-and-a-half quarters but eventually trimmed a 15-point halftime deficit down to two.
Andrew Walker's nine-yard rushing score made it 21-19 with 4:34 to play, but a failed two-point conversion kept the lead with the home team.
Marian responded with a quick scoring drive that included a 33-yard TD run. The Hounds tacked on a late field goal but failed to recover the ensuing onside kick.
Though UIndy do not turn the ball over, the Hounds went an uncharacteristic 6 for 18 (.333) on 3rd down after ranking third in Division II last year with a 53-percent 3rd-down conversion rate.
TOUGH WEEKUIndy wasn't the only GLVC to fall in non-conference action last week. The league went 2-7 collectively in week two, with only McKendree and Southwest Baptist coming away with wins. See right for last week's GLVC results as well as the upcoming conference schedule.
HOMELAND SECURITYDuring the tenure of Head Coach
Bob Bartolomeo, the Greyhounds have compiled an impressive 25-5 (.833) record at Key Stadium since 2010. UIndy's loss to William Jewell in last year's season finale marked the first regular-season defeat at home since falling to eventual national-runner-up Wayne State in 2011 – a span of 15 games.
POLL POSITIONThe Greyhounds' week-two loss knocked them out of the
AFCA poll, dropping them from No. 23. However, the Hounds are still receiving a handful of votes.
Nevertheless, nearly a third of this week's top-25 spots were reserved for Super Region 4 teams. Fifth-ranked Ferris State and its reigning Harlon Hill winner Jason Vander Laan head the octet, followed closely by Angelo State in eighth. Colorado St.-Pueblo (13) and Ohio Dominican (17) each fell out of the top 10 this week after losing last Saturday.
FRESH LEGSIn his first season as the Greyhounds' No. 1 place kicker, sophomore
Brad Schickel has been perfect in nine kicks this season – 5-for-5 in field goal attempts and 4-for-4 in PATs. The Louisville, Ky., product connected on three 30-plus yarders at Marian last week, including a personal-long 38 yarder in the second quarter.
Schickel, who also dropped three punts inside the 10-yard line, including a 53 yarder, is stepping into the shoes of former UIndy great
Scott Miller, whose 343 career points are the most in program history.
THE BIG 4-0Senior quarterback
Connor Barthel enters the week just one touchdown pass shy of No. 40 for his career. Hitting the milestone would make the Indianapolis native just the fifth Greyhound to toss for 40 or more scores. No. 4 in the UIndy annals is current Greyhound quarterback coach Casey Gillin, who had 47 from 2005-07.
TACKLING TANDEMUIndy's linebacker duo of
Derrick Bryant and
Rob Dury have combined to make 48 total tackles already this season. Bryant's 11.5 tackles-per-game average is good for fourth in the GLVC, while Dury's 11.0 is right behind in fifth.
"BINGO!"Starting for the injured senior
Josh Bass, sophomore cornerback
Mike Hamilton made a play to remember last week. A redshirt-sophomore out of Medaryville, Ind., Hamilton made a great read on a third-quarter pass by Marian and then muscled the ball away from the receiver to garner his first career interception.
REECE'S NEW RECORDThe last time the Greyhounds played in the Key Stadium turf, senior
Reece Horn put on quite a show. The 6-3, 215-pound wideout amassed a GLVC-record 241 receiving yards in a 27-17 win versus in-region Saginaw Valley State Sept. 3. The former record holder? Current Southwest Baptist receiver Nate Mourik with 219 yards vs. William Jewell in last year's opener.
Furthermore, Horn's receiving total came just six shy of breaking the UIndy single-game mark (246 by Cesare Manning in 2003), while his 13 catches fell one shy of matching another school record (14 by Manning in '03 and Mar'Quone Edmonds twice in '12).
