Week 7 Football Preview | UIndy at Quincy

UIndy Greyhounds (2-4, 1-2) at Quincy Hawks (4-2, 2-2)
Saturday, Oct. 15, 7 p.m. ET, Quincy, Ill.

ON TAP
The Greyhounds head to western Illinois for a key road contest at Quincy University Saturday night. UIndy looks to get a "W" this week to position itself well for the stretch run that includes three of the final four games at home.

ABOUT QUINCY
The Hawks enter the week with an even 2-2 record in GLVC play, putting them one slot ahead of the Hounds in the conference standings. They're coming off a 55-14 blowout win at William Jewell last week, a game that saw senior wideout Eric Poindexter lay waste to the Cardinal secondary. The Newport News, Va., native broke GLVC records with 20 catches for 317 yards, while also adding three TDs. He became the only NCAA player across all levels to notch a 300-yard receiving game this season, while his reception total of 20 broke the conference record held by former UIndy All-American Reece Horn, who corralled 17 catches last season -- also against William Jewell.

Also the team's kick and punt returner, Poindexter leads Division II in all-purpose yards at 205 per game. He needs just 18 yards this weekend to break the program mark for career receiving yards.

HOUNDS vs. HAWKS
Saturday's opponents have faced off four times previously, with the Greyhounds taking all four. The series started with three blowout wins for UIndy, but last year's contest ended in a much-tighter 26-20 final at Key Stadium. The Hounds built a 23-7 advantage midway through the second quarter and ultimately held the Hawks to just 242 total yards, but the visitors managed to make it a six-point game with 4:38 to go. However, UIndy would not relinquish possession the rest of the way, picking up three first downs in the waning minutes to ice it. Andrew Walker led all players with 107 rushing yards on 19 carries, while Rob Dury garnered a game-high 11 tackles.

LAST TIME OUT
UIndy got its first conference win with a 34-24 victory versus McKendree in the annual Homecoming game. Amazingly, the game ended nearly identically to last year's meeting in Lebonan. Both contests featured the Bearcats trailing 27-24 with the ball and less than two minutes to go. And unfortunately for McKendree, both ended with a pick-6 by the Greyhounds, this time with cornerback Korey Rogan providing the game-sealing INT and touchdown.

All told, UIndy amassed five interceptions on the night, including three from Rogan and one each from Robert Williams and Derrick Bryant. Bryant added 11 tackles, one shy of Dury's game-high total of 12.

ON AN ISLAND
The reigning GLVC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week will most likely be going head-to-head much of the night Saturday. Quincy WR Poindexter and UIndy DB Rogan collected the aforementioned awards earlier this week and will be one of the matchups to watch Saturday night.

INTERCEPT COURSE
Rogan's three interceptions last week marked the highest total for a Greyhound in three years. Former All-GLVC First Team cornerback Andre Smith was the last Hound to turn the trick, picking off three balls versus Missouri S&T on Oct. 5, 2013.

In case you were wondering, the program single-game record* for interceptions is four, set by Ken Brooks in 1973 and later matched by Tom Collins in 1984.

ELSEWHERE IN THE GLVC
As the last undefeated team in conference play, Truman has emerged as the frontrunner in the GLVC title race. The Bulldogs positioned themselves well after downing 20th-ranked and previously-unbeaten Southwest Baptist, 26-16, on the road last week. Truman will step out of league play this week with a trip to perennial-power Grand Valley State Saturday. The game represents a giant opportunity for the Bulldogs, as the in-region Lakers are 6-0 on the season and ranked No. 2 in the latest Division II coaches poll.

#DRIVEFOR5
With five weeks remaining on the schedule, the Greyhounds are in the running for a fifth consecutive GLVC title. Their current streak of four straight conference crowns broke the program record for most consecutive league championships, surpassing the three-year run of Hoosier College Conference titles from 1953-55. All told, UIndy has won 31 of 34 games versus GLVC opponents since the conference began sponsoring football in 2012.

DOUBLE TROUBLE
Both UIndy starting wide receivers can now claim multiple 100-yard receiving games this season. Junior Garrett Willis notched his second such game versus McKendree last week, amassing 117 yards on just six catches, including a career-long 77-yard touchdown in the opening quarter.

Meanwhile, teammate Malik Higgins, who ranks 13th in D-II in receiving yards, has three 100-yard games to date. The last time two Greyhounds had at least two 100-yard receiving games came in 2013 -- Reece Horn (2) and Greg Johnson (2).

RATE OF RETURN
Junior Tuwan Payton had another solid week returning kickoffs, compiling 102 yards on three chances. That line included a 54-yard return that set up a first-quarter field goal. For the season, the New Albany, Ind., product ranks fourth in Division II in kickoff return average at 35.1 yards per. He has two career kickoff return TDs to his credit, including a 92-yarder at Southwest Baptist in week three this year.

In addition, Payton is approaching the program record for career kickoff return yards. He moved into second place last week and currently sits at 1,183 -- 441 yards shy of UIndy all-time leader Ryan Forney (2008-11).

TACKLING THE ISSUES
UIndy's senior linebacker tandem of Derrick Bryant and Rob Dury continues to impress this season. Both defenders have reached double figures in tackles in five of the six games this year, as both rank in the top 10 in the nation in tackles per game. Bryant averages 12.7 stops per week, which puts him fifth in D-II, while Dury's 12.5 average is good for sixth.
