INDIANAPOLIS – Fresh off an upset of No. 2-seeded Missouri S&T, the University of Indianapolis men's soccer team looks to keep their season going on Friday night when they battle No. 3-ranked Southern Indiana in the semifinals of the 2016 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Tournament.
Â
The Greyhounds and Screaming Eagles will kick off at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Friday night under the light at Michael Carroll Stadium on the Campus of IUPUI and the match will be broadcast live on the GLVC Sports Network.
Â
HOW WE GOT HERE
UIndy faced a stiff test in their opening round match after entering as the seventh-seed in the eight-team tournament. All the Greyhounds did was hold a powerful Missouri S&T squad without a shot on goal for more than 50 minutes, giving sophomore
Brett Langley a chance to sneak the game-winning goal home in the 70
th minute to give UIndy the 1-0 upset win.
Â
Southern Indiana took care of business in front of a home in their quarterfinal match against No. 6-seeded Missouri-St. Louis, downing the Tritons 1-0 on an 81
st minute goal from midfielder Stephen Tuma.
Â
ABOUT SOUTHERN INDIANA
The Screaming Eagles enter Friday night's match with a 13-2-3 record, which includes an unbeaten 6-0-3 clip away from their home turf. USI has not lost a contest since Oct. 9 when they dropped a 2-1 decision to then-number one ranked Rockhurst University, a streak that spans their last six matches.
Â
The Screaming Eagles enter the semis with the third most potent offense in the league after banging home 36 goals on the year. Eric Ramirez led all Screaming Eagle attackers with 10 goals in just 15 matches, a total that's good for second in the GLVC coming into Friday night.
Â
Flanking Ramirez on the USI attack are a pair of 19-point performers in Kyle Richardville and Sean Rickey. Richardville finished with seven goals and added five assists while Rickey potted six goals and dished out seven helpers on the year.
Â
Defensively, only Rockhurst surrendered fewer goals than the Screaming Eagles' 16 goals against. In goal, Adam Zehme carries a 0.85 goals against average and an .810 save percentage coming into the match. Â
Â
HOUNDS VERSUS THE SCREAMING EAGLES
The teams met in Indianapolis during the regular season with Southern Indiana taking a 1-0 decision at Key Stadium. Richardville was the game's lone goal scorer, heading home a Riley Belding corner kick just before halftime to provide the difference on the score board.
Â
Although they are two of the longest-serving members of the GLVC, the Greyhounds and Screaming Eagles will be facing each other in the conference tournament for the first time ever. USI holds a 21-12-0 advantage in the all-time series.
Â
GREYHOUND LEADERS
A pair of freshmen topped the Greyhounds in scoring in the regular season. Midfielder
Javier Steinwascher is in the middle of an impressive debut season with five goals and a team-high four assists for a club-leading 14 points. One point behind him with 13 points and a team-high six goals is forward
James Jenkins.
Â
Last year's leading scorer, senior
Jake Meyer, is tied with Steinwascher for second on the team with five goals, four of which are game-winning tallies which ranks him in a tie with Drury's David Cross for second in the GLVC behind Rockhurst's Kaleb Jackson.
Â
Friday night's match will feature a battle of two of the top defenses in the league, as UIndy currently sits third in the GLVC in goals allowed with just 17 against. Sophomore
Miles Palmer will be between the pipes for the Hounds on Sunday after going 7-3-4 with an .810 save percentage and a 0.72 goals against average, the latter good for second lowest in the league.
Â
The London, England-native made his first career post season start in in the quarterfinals, turning aside all four shots against the Miners.
Â
AWAITING THE WINNER…
The other semifinal matchup features the two top offenses in the league with top-seeded and defending conference tournament champion Rockhurst battling No. 5-seeded Quincy for a spot in the championship game on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Rockhurst advanced to Indianapolis with a 3-0 win over No. 8-seeded Maryville last Sunday while Quincy punched their ticket to the Circle City with an impressive 2-0 road win over No. 4-seeded Drury in the opening round.
Â
The championship match is set for 3:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
