ST. CHARLES, Mo. – In what continues to be a historic season by the UIndy women's lacrosse team, it officially comes full circle on Friday evening when the Greyhounds step on the turf of Hunter Stadium on the campus of Lindenwood University, the Midwest region's top seed.
Â
UIndy kicked off its inaugural campaign at one the most successful NCAA Division II programs in recent memory back on February 13, 2016, when the Crimson and Grey visited Lindenwood to open the season. The Lions, ranked third in the country at the time, handed the Greyhounds a 15-0 defeat.
Â
Things have definitely made a step in the right direction, as the Hounds were tied with the Lions until 12 minutes left in the contest a season ago at Hunter Stadium. This season, UIndy led 7-6 early in the second half before Lindenwood flexed its muscles to win, 11-7. The Lions are heading into the regional as the nation's top-ranked team.
Â
Eight days after the season-opening loss to Lindenwood, the Greyhounds defeated the first ranked opponent in program history: the No. 9 Regis Rangers. UIndy and Regis will meet this Friday at 5 p.m. CT in the opening round of the Midwest regional.
Â
Back on February 8, the Hounds spotted the Rangers their first of two five-goal leads in the first 12 minutes as the visitors led 5-0. The Hounds rattled off five in a row, and seven of eight to take a lead before allowing the Rangers to score five unanswered goals again. With 11:30 remaining in the second half,
Delaney Davidson knotted the game on a man-up situation, and less than four minutes later
Hannah Burczyk scored her second of the day, which proved to be the game-winner.
Â
The Greyhounds wrapped up the regular season with a 14-3 record and the second seed in the GLIAC postseason tournament. After defeating Tiffin in the semifinal, UIndy took down 2017 conference champions McKendree to win its first league title in its third season of existence. Now, the road continues into the NCAA tournament.
Â
UIndy had nine all-conference players, including GLIAC Defender of the Year
Riley McClure and GLIAC Freshman of the Year
Lauryn Hardoy. Each player was also named to the conference's first team. Davidson and Burczyk earned second-team honors, while five others were named to the honorable-mention squad. The Greyhounds were the only team to feature a freshman on any all-conference list, having five rookies be recognized by the coaches.
Â
The Hounds are ranked No. 12 in the latest IWLCA poll that was released on Monday afternoon, while the Rangers are No. 11. The winner moves on to face top-ranked Lindenwood on Saturday evening at 5 p.m. CT. Links for
