INDIANAPOLIS- The #10 UIndy women's tennis team was again picked to finish at the top of the GLVC East Division, announced Friday morning in the 2019 GLVC Women's Tennis Coaches Preseason Poll.
The GLVC Women's Tennis Preseason Poll was voted on by the league head coaches and ranks six teams in the East and seven teams in the West as 13 of the 14 member schools sponsor the sport.
The Greyhounds, who finished runner up in the GLVC East a season ago, captured divisional titles in 2017 and 2015. UIndy was also the runner up at the GLVC Women's Tennis Championships last season, falling in the league finale to Drury.
Indianapolis went 16-7 overall and 4-1 in league play last season, earning 71 points and 11 first-place votes in the poll for the top spot in the East Division. The Greyhounds will bring back the 2018 GLVC Player and Freshman of the Year in senior
Hanna Volikova and sophomore
Alina Kislitskaya, respectively, who were both also All-American picks a year ago. Head coach
Malik Tabet will lead the squad into 2019 for his sixth season at the helm.
Bellarmine University (21-4, 4-1) was the next highest vote getter in the East, garnering 59 points and one first-place vote after winning the East Division title last season. The Knights will be led by first-year headman Bill Carey, who inherits a pair of All-GLVC honorees in junior Ashley Jonathan and three-time pick senior Maggie Wolroth.
Following Bellarmine in the East was Lewis University in third with 47 points and the other first-place vote, while the University of Illinois Springfield earned 42 points to take fourth. The University of Southern Indiana (29) and McKendree University (19) rounded out the six-team field in fifth and sixth, respectively.
Defending GLVC Champion Drury (19-2, 6-0 GLVC in 2018) is the West Division's top pick, garnering 11 of the possible 12 votes for 82 points, as Conference policy prohibits coaches from casting a vote for their own team. The Panthers have competed in every single GLVC Championship title match since joining the league in 2005, collecting eight trophies in that time.
The 2019 GLVC Women's Tennis Championship Tournament will be held at the Center Grove High School from April 19-21 in Indianapolis.
