Greyhounds Host Miners Saturday With History on the Line

Missouri S&T Miners vs.
8 UIndy Greyhounds

Saturday, Oct. 26, 6 p.m. ET, Key Stadium

ON TAP
The eighth-ranked and undefeated UIndy football team begins the meat of its conference slate this weekend by hosting the Missouri S&T Miners under the lights of Key Stadium Saturday night. The Greyhounds will be looking to set the GLVC record for most consecutive conference victories.

GLVC GIANT
UIndy is on the cusp of breaking an impressive GLVC record this week, one that the Greyhounds themselves first set five years ago. The current group of Hounds is riding a 22-game winning streak in conference play, matching the league-record-setting string of GLVC wins that UIndy managed from 2012-2014. The Greyhounds are 54-4 (.931) in GLVC play all-time and have won six of the seven conference titles since the league began sponsoring football in 2012 (Missouri S&T and Truman split the 2016 crown).

ABOUT MISSOURI S&T
The Miners had their five-game winning streak snapped last week when a Truman field goal with seven seconds left gave the host Bulldogs a 41-39 win. S&T, who was down 14 early in the third quarter and 10 points to start the fourth, took its first lead of the game with 2:30 to go, but a personal foul penalty on the ensuing defensive possession nullified a Miner sack, propelling Truman in what proved to be the game-winning drive.

One of the strengths of the Miners this season has been their defense's nose for the football. S&T is tied for 10th in Division II with 18 takeaways, recovering eight of 15 fumbles forced and earning 10 interceptions. Conversely, UIndy is tied for third in the nation with just five giveaways on the year – two lost fumbles and only three INTs.

HOUNDS vs. MINERS
First hooking up in 2012, UIndy is unbeaten in seven meetings with the Miners. Each of the last three contests was decided by 10 points or less, however, including a 24-17 Greyhound win in Rolla last October. Some five-and-a-half hours after the opening kickoff (due chiefly to three separate lightning delays), Al McKeller converted a 4th & 1 with a 19-yard, game-winning touchdown with 1:48 left.

Side note: UIndy overcame 11-point halftime deficits in each of the last two games versus S&T. The Miners did not score a touchdown in the second half in either contest.

KEY TO SUCCESS
Few programs can match UIndy's recent success at home. The Greyhounds own a stellar 40-4 (.909) record at Key Stadium since 2012, including an even more impressive 28-1 (.966) mark at home versus GLVC opponents. UIndy has won nine consecutive games at Key Stadium overall and a school-record 17 straight at home in conference play.

LAST TIME OUT
Prior to the bye last week, UIndy continued its trend of lopsided victories, downing Quincy 59-19 at Key Stadium back on Oct. 12. The Greyhounds ran off 31 unanswered points before the Hawks finally got on the board in the waning seconds of the first half. Seven different Greyhounds would find the end zone, with Aaron Matio scoring twice and Paul Buisman adding 11 points in the kicking game.

OFFENSIVE BEHAVIOR
Coming off their second straight 59-point performance, the Greyhounds have climbed to second in the nation in scoring offense at 50.3 ppg. The Hounds are on pace to shatter the school record of 38.2 points per game, set just two years ago.

FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS
Junior Daveon Bell crafted his second consecutive game with 200-plus all-purpose yards versus Quincy. The hometown product struck his biggest blow with an 81-yard punt return for a touchdown in the second quarter. That gave him three punt return TDs for his career, tying the program record. He also jumped into second place all-time in punt return yards at 726, second only to the 919 amassed by Craig Cothron (1995-98). On the season, he currently ranks second in the nation at 19.8 yards per punt return.

RECORD WATCH
Revisiting what has become a weekly feature, Al McKeller has amassed impressive numbers is his time as a Hound. The hometown product and 2018 GLVC Offensive Player of the Year is just two-and-a-half years into his collegiate career and is already among the school's career leaders in rushing yards and rushing TDs (see below). He is within striking distance of both school records in just his junior campaign and is looking to become the first-ever Greyhound with three 1,000-yard-rushing seasons.
