LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The UIndy track & field teams kicked off the 2019 outdoor season this weekend at the Bellarmine Invitational in Louisville, Ky. A number of NCAA provisional marks were set, as well as an automatic qualifying mark and a school record.
Â
After setting a pair of individual school marks during the indoor season, sophomore distance runner
Lauren Bailey continued to rewrite the UIndy record books during the new outdoor campaign. The Westfield, Ind., native won the women's 5,000-meter run on Friday with a provo-time of 17:09.48, breaking a three-year-old UIndy record.
Â
All the other NCAA time standards were hit in the throwing events. Senior
Austin Hogan had the biggest mark, as his winning discus toss of 56.12 meters eclipsed the NCAA automatic qualifying standard. Hogan has thus already punched his ticket to Nationals in the event, one in which he was the national runner-up last year. Hogan also hit provo marks in the hammer throw (64.98, also a PR) and the shot put (16.95).
Â
Also in the hammer, sophomore
Keeton Adams surpassed his pervious personal best by eight full meters with a throw of 53.45, second only to Hogan among the collegiate competitors.
Â
In the women's throws, senior
Katie Monk won the shot, hammer and discus, hitting provo marks in each. Fellow-senior
Hilary Paxson also notched a provo, placing third in the hammer with a 52.38-meter toss.
Â
The Greyhounds took first place in a number of other events. Sophomore
Mary Costello led the UIndy women's pole vaulters with a winning height of 3.60 meters.
Brooke Green finished first in the women's 200 meter, and
Keri Ertel won the women's 400-meter hurdles.
Â
On the men's side, versatile senior
Trace Oswalt won the javelin (53.48 m) while placing second in the pole vault (4.12 m) and third in the long jump (6.80 m). Sophomore
Dallas Ford won the 400-meter hurdles (54.95). The Hounds went 1-2 in the men's high jump, with
DeAndre Bluitt (1.90 m) edging teammate
Chandler Martin (1.85 m).
NOTE
In addition to the meet at Bellarmine, the Greyhounds had planned to compete at the Wash U Invite in St. Louis this weekend but instead sent everyone to Louisville due to weather concerns.
