AZUSA, Calif. – With the annual Indiana Little State Meet canceled this weekend due to weather, the UIndy track & field teams' only action came some 2,000 miles away where it proverbially never rains. Distance runners
Lauren Bailey and
Mickayla Wenzel flew to Azusa, Calif., for the Bryan Clay Invitational Thursday and Friday and put up some impressive times.
Â
With Bailey running the 5,000 meter and Wenzel racing in the 1500, both Greyhounds obliterated their previous personal records. Wenzel shaved more than 12 seconds off her 1500 PR with a time of 4:35.44, while Bailey lowered her own school record in the 5K by nearly 25 seconds with a time of 16:44.64. Wenzel won her heat by six seconds, while Bailey now ranks 11th in Division II in the latter event.
Said Assistant Head Coach Brad Robinson of Bailey's performance: " She was very patient, as the race went out right at her goal race pace, but it took until the mile for the race pack to thin out. She made a great move going into the 3K, which kept her in contact with the main pack and set her up for a big PR."
