Hounds Wrap Up Final Weekend Before GLVCs

HILLSDALE, Mich. – The UIndy track & field teams divided its forces three different ways this weekend, with student-athletes traveling to Hillsdale College, the University of Louisville and the Ohio State University. A highlight came at Hillsdale where sophomore Mary Costello broke the school's pole vault record.

GINA RELAYS (Hillsdale)
The majority of the Greyhounds went to the annual Gina Relays in Hillsdale, Mich., where Costello hit her record-breaking mark. The South Bend, Ind., native cleared 3.95 meters on her third and final attempt at the height, earning fourth place among the talented field. Her freshman teammate, Megan Young, also surpassed the previous program outdoor record, as her career-best 3.70-meter vault was good for eighth.

The Hounds took runner-up honors in both 400-meters races, with freshman Mary Watts earning a time of 57.90 seconds in the women's event and senior Brian Sales posting a 49.56 in the men's.

Junior AJ Murphy won the men's shot put with a throw of 16.28 meters. He also set a PR in the discus with a fifth-place toss of 47.26. Sophomore Nic Ray placed fourth in the discus (47.55), matching junior Matthew Cornett's finish in the javelin.

Other standouts in the field included sophomore Brady Walden and his third-place finish in the long jump (43.58), and sophomore Katrinia Hopkins with her top-four finishes in both the hammer throw (3rd, 49.82) and the discus (4th, 41.62).

JESSE OWENS CLASSIC (Ohio State)
The Hounds' top throwers trekked to Columbus, Ohio to take on some of the stiff competition. Senior Austin Hogan earned a pair of second-place finishes in the championship flights. He bested all collegiate athletes in the hammer throw, finishing second only to his coach, Matt Royer, with a toss of 66.23 meters. He also secured runner-up in the discus, posting a mark of 53.75.

Katie Monk took second place in the non-championship women's discus (48.42) and sixth in the non-championship hammer (56.14), just ahead of teammate Hilary Paxson in the latter event (9th, 52.98). Also, sophomore Keeton Adams placed 13th in the non-championship men's shot put (15.77).

LENNY LYLES/CLARK WOOD INVITE (Louisville)
Finally, just two Hounds made the short trip to U of L. Keri Ertel posted a time of 1:01.92 in the women's 400 hurldes, good for fourth, and freshman Alexander Brown-Baez competed in both the 200 (28th, 23.03) and the 400 (26th, 51.08).
