KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The UIndy men's track & field team captured the team title at the GLVC Outdoor Championships, held at Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo., Thursday through Saturday.
Combining for 222 points in the meet – 88 more than second-place McKendree, the Greyhounds made it a GLVC sweep, winning both the indoor and outdoor titles in the 2018-19 academic year. This weekend's margin represented to most decisive victory at the league's outdoor meet since 2008.
Meanwhile, UIndy took runner-up honors in the women's team standings, finishing a mere half point behind Lewis University – the second smallest maring of victory in the the event's history.

Veteran head coach
Scott Fangman was named the GLVC Men's Outdoor Coach of the Year, while senior
Austin Hogan (left) was voted the GLVC Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year for the third consecutive season. The latter secured his third title in as many events on Saturday, winning the shot put with a mark of 17.94 meters. The Greyhounds would score a total of 25 points in the men's shot alone, with Greyhounds also taking third, fourth, fifth and eighth place.
Including Hogan's shot put gold, the Hounds racked up seven event titles on Saturday, bringing their combined total for the meet to 12.
One of the most exciting finishes of the day came in the men's 400. Junior
Brian Sales overtook Truman's Elijah's Farrales in the final few meters, earning the gold by just a tenth of a second. Sales would also place fourth in the 200.
The distance runners amassed big points for UIndy as a group. They won both 5,000-meter races, with sophomore
Lauren Bailey crossing first for the women and freshman
Nathan Herbst winning the men's gold.
Briana Leonard (4th) and
Mickayla Wenzel (5th) also scored for the women, while
Chris Switzer (7th) did the same for the men.
Wenzel took gold in the 1,500-meter with a personal record (PR) of 4:33.87. Bailey captured the silver and
Madison Vauters placed fifth.
Senior
DeAndre Bluitt repeated as the men's high jump champ (2.01 m), while
Katie Monk won her third consecutive gold medal in the women's discus.
UIndy had four student-athletes score points in the men's 110-meter hurdles. Sophomore
Dallas Ford (15.12) led the way with a third-place finish, followed by
Sam Bokodi in fourth,
Cameron Engelhardt in sixth and
Sam DeWitt in seventh. Both Bokodi (15.23) and Engelhardt (15.52) set PRs in the prelims.
Other podium finishes for the Hounds included
Keri Ertel's third place finish in the 100-meter hurdles (14.47) and
Mary Watts' bronze-medal performance in the 400 (57.64). Both ladies set PRs.
FRIDAY
Senior
Austin Hogan earned two titles for the men's team Friday, winning both the discus (54.67m) and hammer throw (65.17). He is now a four-time conference champion in the discus. Sophomore
Keeton Adams earned bronze in the hammer, setting a PR and hitting a provisional mark of 55.52 meters.
In the women's throwing events, senior
Katie Monk captured gold in the hammer (58.33m) and silver in the shot put (14.59m), with her mark in the former good for a PR. Senior
Hilary Paxson took bronze in the hammer (52.53m), while
Katrinia Hopkins placed fifth in the shot and sixth in the hammer.
Fresh off setting a new school record in the pole vault last weekend, sophomore
Mary Costello added GLVC champion to her resume. The South Bend, Ind., native cleared 3.90 meters to earn the gold medal Friday.
Kylie Falcone joined her on the podium with a third-place vault of 3.65 meters, while fellow Hounds
Brittney Clark (4th) and
Megan Young (5th) also scored points.
Racing in her final GLVC meet, senior
Briana Leonard captured her first career conference title, taking gold in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. The Carmel, Ind., product hit a provisional mark and a PR with a time of 10:49.02, beating the field by more than 20 seconds.
UIndy put two on the podium in the men's long jump. Both senior
Trace Oswalt (2nd) and sophomore
Brady Walden (3rd) each jumped 7.03 meters, combining to score 14 points for the Hounds. Oswalt also tied for fifth in the pole vault to tack on 3.5 more points.
Courtlin Kelly took bronze in the decathlon with 5147 points, one spot ahead of teammate
Matthew Cornett.
A number of preliminary events were also contested, with various Greyhounds earning spots in tomorrow's finals. The highlight came when
Keri Ertel posted the biggest time of the day, breaking a 14-year-old school record in the women's 400-meter hurdles. Her time of 1:01.23 secured the top seed in the finals while also improving her NCAA provisional standing.
The 10,000 meter race was held on Thursday. The UIndy men scored a combined nine points, with freshman
Chris Switzer taking fourth and sophomore
Jacob Woodrow placing fifth.
