Men’s Track & Field Wins GLVC Outdoor Title, Women Second

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The UIndy men's track & field team captured the team title at the GLVC Outdoor Championships, held at Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo., Thursday through Saturday.

Combining for 222 points in the meet – 88 more than second-place McKendree, the Greyhounds made it a GLVC sweep, winning both the indoor and outdoor titles in the 2018-19 academic year. This weekend's margin represented to most decisive victory at the league's outdoor meet since 2008.

Meanwhile, UIndy took runner-up honors in the women's team standings, finishing a mere half point behind Lewis University – the second smallest maring of victory in the the event's history.

Hogan AOTYVeteran head coach Scott Fangman was named the GLVC Men's Outdoor Coach of the Year, while senior Austin Hogan (left) was voted the GLVC Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year for the third consecutive season. The latter secured his third title in as many events on Saturday, winning the shot put with a mark of 17.94 meters. The Greyhounds would score a total of 25 points in the men's shot alone, with Greyhounds also taking third, fourth, fifth and eighth place.

Including Hogan's shot put gold, the Hounds racked up seven event titles on Saturday, bringing their combined total for the meet to 12.

One of the most exciting finishes of the day came in the men's 400. Junior Brian Sales overtook Truman's Elijah's Farrales in the final few meters, earning the gold by just a tenth of a second. Sales would also place fourth in the 200.

The distance runners amassed big points for UIndy as a group. They won both 5,000-meter races, with sophomore Lauren Bailey crossing first for the women and freshman Nathan Herbst winning the men's gold. Briana Leonard (4th) and Mickayla Wenzel (5th) also scored for the women, while Chris Switzer (7th) did the same for the men.

Wenzel took gold in the 1,500-meter with a personal record (PR) of 4:33.87. Bailey captured the silver and Madison Vauters placed fifth.

Senior DeAndre Bluitt repeated as the men's high jump champ (2.01 m), while Katie Monk won her third consecutive gold medal in the women's discus.

UIndy had four student-athletes score points in the men's 110-meter hurdles. Sophomore Dallas Ford (15.12) led the way with a third-place finish, followed by Sam Bokodi in fourth, Cameron Engelhardt in sixth and Sam DeWitt in seventh. Both Bokodi (15.23) and Engelhardt (15.52) set PRs in the prelims.

Other podium finishes for the Hounds included Keri Ertel's third place finish in the 100-meter hurdles (14.47) and Mary Watts' bronze-medal performance in the 400 (57.64). Both ladies set PRs.

FRIDAY
Senior Austin Hogan earned two titles for the men's team Friday, winning both the discus (54.67m) and hammer throw (65.17). He is now a four-time conference champion in the discus. Sophomore Keeton Adams earned bronze in the hammer, setting a PR and hitting a provisional mark of 55.52 meters.

In the women's throwing events, senior Katie Monk captured gold in the hammer (58.33m) and silver in the shot put (14.59m), with her mark in the former good for a PR. Senior Hilary Paxson took bronze in the hammer (52.53m), while Katrinia Hopkins placed fifth in the shot and sixth in the hammer.

Fresh off setting a new school record in the pole vault last weekend, sophomore Mary Costello added GLVC champion to her resume. The South Bend, Ind., native cleared 3.90 meters to earn the gold medal Friday. Kylie Falcone joined her on the podium with a third-place vault of 3.65 meters, while fellow Hounds Brittney Clark (4th) and Megan Young (5th) also scored points.

Racing in her final GLVC meet, senior Briana Leonard captured her first career conference title, taking gold in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. The Carmel, Ind., product hit a provisional mark and a PR with a time of 10:49.02, beating the field by more than 20 seconds.

Courtlin Kelly took bronze in the decathlon with 5147 points, one spot ahead of teammate Matthew Cornett.

A number of preliminary events were also contested, with various Greyhounds earning spots in tomorrow's finals. The highlight came when Keri Ertel posted the biggest time of the day, breaking a 14-year-old school record in the women's 400-meter hurdles. Her time of 1:01.23 secured the top seed in the finals while also improving her NCAA provisional standing.
