SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The UIndy men's golf team (272-283) ran away with an 18-stroke win at the Dan Salisbury Memorial Tournament, hosted by the University of Illinois Springfield at The Rail Golf Course in Springfield, Ill., Monday and Tuesday. Four Greyhounds earned all-tournament honors, including individual medalist
Erik Edwards (66-70).
Â
Thanks to a near record-setting first round, the Hounds jumped out to a 13-shot lead after Monday. UIndy's team score of 272 came one stroke shy of the program record – set back in 2008, while three Greyhounds came one shot away from matching the school's individual 18-hole benchmark, as Edwards,
Oliver Mast and
Jon Cloyd each fired a first-round 66.
Â
"I'm really pleased with this tournament," said Head Coach Brent Nicoson. "It can be tough playing with a big lead, but credit to our guys for staying on the accelerator and shooting another under-par round (Tuesday). The golf course played much tougher today, so -5 was a solid team score."
Â
UIndy's second-round output included three rounds of par of better from its lineup players.
Cam Carroll, who finished third overall, led the way with a four-under 68 Tuesday.
Â
Ultimately, it was Edwards that shared medalist honors in the 43-man field, notching his second individual title in as many events. Through 72 holes this fall, the senior from Louisville, Ky., is averaging 69.8 strokes per round.
Â
Said Nicoson: "I'm really proud of Erik as he has yet to be beaten this year after this co-medalist effort. Cam also had a great round today and we had several red numbers this week from multiple players. If we can continue to have good depth, it will benefit us later in the season."
Â
Edwards, Carroll, Mast (-5, 4th) and
Jacob Nickell (-4, 5th) all finished in the top five and thus garnered all-tournament accolades. Senior
Spencer Klimek (-2) also finished under par to share seventh.
